Microsoft's next release of its Office suite is likely to be popular with users, but not for the reasons the software giant would like. Most will not be interested in its advanced features, according to analysts, but will value the upgrade as it will correct existing problems, such as Outlook freezing when there is a network problem. | ||

Outlook freezes when there is a network problem?
Hmm, used to have that issue with Outlook 97, but Outlook 2002 has been fine. |

| I use OE most of the time to access Exchange mail because Exchange server supports both POP3 and IMAP4. OE is faster and less headache. I only use Outlook for Exchange specific task like schedule and address book etc. |

This doesn't make much sense.
There will ALWAYS be new problems to replace the old one's that get fixed. The only way the quality of Office will improve is if they stay with a particular version for more than a year or two (please, for crying out loud!) and keep pounding on it and releasing updates. But, updates don't generate revenue and we all know that this is what it's all about. TL |

They also have to fix the LDAP module in Outlook 2002, which is effectively broken and useless.

OE can't beat what I consider the prime benifit of using Outlook, and is the primary reason I use Outlook. All data (except filters) stored in one, simple easy-to-maintain, transportable PST data file. Rebuilding a crashed OE setup can be a nightmare if there's a lot of data involved. TL |

linuxhippie - There's a variety of ways to do it. You could automate Outlook and write files out, whatever.

| You can export .pst to a number of different formats including CSV (DOS), CSV (Windows), dBase, Access, Excel, FoxPro, tab delimited (DOS), and tab delimited (Windows). You can find this from File | Import and Export | Export to a file. |

#9, I use the LDAP address book provider in Outlook 2002 against the Exchange 2000/Active Directory LDAP service with no real problems. It's a little bit annoying that it logs into every LDAP service you've got configured as soon as you open the address book (unlike OE which only logs into a service when you click the "Find Now" button).
You probably just need to fix your configuration. Unless you override it, Outlook will choose the default port of 389, which was right for Exchange 5.x and other LDAP servers, but if you're going against Active Directory, you'll need to click the "More Settings" button and change the port to 3268. Also, the Exchange 5.x LDAP service allowed anonymous access by default, but headhunters had a field day downloading companies' entire phone lists that way, so Active Directory requires authentication by default, meaning you need to check the "My server requires me to log in" checkbox and provide domain account and password. Lastly, you need to specify a search base. The dialog gives an example of cn=users,dc=exchange,dc=microsoft,dc=com which confuses some people because they don't realize that "exchange" is a third-level DNS zone in this example. They think the dc=exchange is just a static portion which applies to any zone running Exchange. If your domain is contuso.com, then your search base to query the Global Address List should simply be cn=users,dc=contuso,dc=com. Note that this is different than Outlook Express. In OE, you should always specify NULL for the search base when querying any version of Exchange (but the port numbers still need to be different for 5.x vs. 2000). |
