The leading trade associations for the music and technology industries, which have been at loggerheads over consumers downloading songs on the Internet, have negotiated a compromise they contend will protect copyrights on movies and music without new government involvement. "How companies satisfy consumer expectations is a business decision that should be driven by the dynamics of the marketplace and should not be legislated and regulated," the agreement said, according to one person who read parts of it to The Associated Press. These companies, including Microsoft Corp., IBM, Intel Corp. and Dell Computer Corp., also will announce support for aggressive enforcement against digital pirates. | ||

I agree with you Kennedy, we are too far down the path to turn back now. Not saying that I am advocating no copyrights but with Kazaa and similar applications out there IT IS TOO LATE. Here is their problem! how do you protect copyright and still allow "fair usage rights ". I don't think that it can be done. When I buy a CD I don't want to jump through hoops just to play it. And to be honest I don't even want CD I want my music on my harddrive. I also want to play the music that I bought anywhere and I anytime that I want. Even upload it to Kazaa ;)

I'm seeing a lot of fallacies here, and I'm unsure if these are intentional or people really just not understanding.
People thinking the cost of production of the physical media is the whole of the total cost of creating the music. It's not. People equating the cost of a DVD to a CD. Movies make the bulk of their revenues in the theatres, the DVD channel is usually just gravy. The two mediums are not comparable. Besides, I receive far more enjoyment from a CD than a DVD, reason is simple... I will play a CD 1000 times or more in it's lifetime. A DVD? How many people aren't completely sick of a movie after having seen it 10 times? I mean come on. Ok, now all together people and repeat after me. The fact that it costs substantially less to reproduce intellectual property in a physical form than it cost to initial create it is the reason why we have Copyright law. RedHook mentioned something about protecting both fair use and copyright. Well that's pretty simple. Napster, Kazaa and such are not fair-use, they are not protected. Musicmatch, WMP9, etc. are fair use. You aren't going to convince the RIAA to change their business model by stealing from them. You convince them by not boycotting their product completely. Damn stupid argument. |

It's odd that you choose not to buy their media, but you've choosen to steal it instead. Why not take the honorable choice... Choose not to listen to Britney Spears. Seems pretty simple to me. I didn't buy any CD's for about 5 years there in the late 80's because most everything sucked(stupid hair bands, grrr...). I didn't lose anything by not buying or listening to their music. |
