A half dozen companies are developing cell phones based on the Linux operating system, an executive familiar with the plans said Friday.
Among the big names backing Linux for mobile phones are chipmaker Texas Instruments and device maker NEC, representatives from the two companies confirmed Friday.

Well, well-y, well, my little droogies. If the ol' Linux phone isn't cheaper than what you get now, I'd say that smacks a bit in the face of the "Linux is more inexpensive" crowd, wouldn't it?
After all, Linux is "free" therefore the phones must be cheaper, if not....

Cthulu, your post is a little bit masturbatory and premature, don't you think? Since we don't know how much a WPS phone is yet, and they've been "announcing" that for three years now?

Make no mistake. I do not hate Linux. But what I do get tired of is when companies put the thing in anything without regard to whether or not it's a good idea. Next thing they'll be putting it in beercans to tell you when to go get another.

And what I hate is when people make idiotic statements suggesting NEC, TI (yeah, TI knows nothin' 'bout the mobile market, right?), and these other unannounced companies are using it for no good reason. Do you really think they have zero, zip, nada reasons for doing this? They probably didn't have a single meeting or anything, just signed the contract, right? They saw the word "linux" in the contract and couldn't help but sign. Come on, such a moronic suggestion clearly shows that you do hate linux.

The SmartPhone is already in the market, not the US market. T-Mobile's is due in April last I heard.
BTW, TI is also a SmartPhone partner.

Before Linux branches out, I think they should perfect it on the PC first. They still don't have drivers for many scanners, PC Cameras, AIW 8500 TV Support right out of the box (making it as easy to use as they do stand alone TV Tuner cards), Audigy 2 soundcard, LiveDrive/AudigyDrive/Audigy2Drive inputs...
No, it is way too soon to branch out. Perfect what you have first, then

EWWHWW, you do realize that linux is embedded in many devices already, right? And that embedded devices and cellphones don't need Audigy drivers, right?
Why don't you work on your racist/sexist tendencies and leave linux strategies to the linux developers.

dupe, hippie, everyone... do you think EWWHWW thinks Windows is perfect?
Ha, ha, ha....
Maybe they should perfect that too before branching out into PDAs, game consoles, cellphones, watches, magnets, cars, etc...

"Why is it a bad thing to put linux on a cell phone? :) "
I want...A PHONE! All the damn thing needs to do is dial, have enough minutes for me, and allow incoming calls from people who need to get in touch with me. I don't want any text messaging, SMS, graphics, or any of that crap. And there are lots of people just like me. A phone is ancient tech, there serves no purpose to put any OS on it at all unless you want to add functionality that, frankly, is either unproven or useless.
Plus, many, MANY companies see "linux" and get all drooly-eyed over perception of "free" equating to enhanced products. They're following the tech buzz-word of the week without really knowing anything.
You think Dilbert isn't real? HA! The jokes on you if you think so. Upper management is defined by idiocy and the impossible persuit of "productivity" and "enhanced profit." To that end, they're following the darling of the day: linux.
When the reality sets in, they'll pull back to their previous stances and make claims about how the market wasn't ready (or some other crud.)

I imaging that since Linux will be on the cell phone that person won't be able to make a call with it! :)

Steven123 - "Linux is the perfect OS for embedded devices, licence free and with the flexibility of source code availability, what more can a manufacturer ask for. "
I don't know, Sendo claims Microsoft gave away all their secrets. Is it somehow better for a company to just immediately put temselves in a position where they have to turn over their secrets per the licensing agreement?
I don't know, don't really care. Cell phones with operating systems embedded in them are an answer seeking out a question.
dupe - Quit astroturfing, it's getting really tiring.

Heh. You people don't understand good FUD. It's like claiming Palladium could possibly make it so your computers don't do yada yada...
Well the with the GPL it's very possible for someone to interpret software running on top of the OS, but part of an embedded system is also under the GPL.
Right? or are you denying it's not possible?

But you got to admit, it is possible, isn't it?
