baarod - Actually the article is kind of interesting. I mean he bashes Microsoft where appropriate, but he also points out the ridiculousness of some of the attacks against them.
I like the part where he talks about how only 10-20% of Microsoft's initiatives are successful. But that's really true of any company. Thomas Watson of IBM fame once said "If you want to succeed, double your failure rate." His basic point was that people who are successful are not afraid of taking risk. |

Oh, as to bundling Real, whatever...
I understand his point. Why bother developing something when you can use someone elses. I suspect there is a breakeven point, however, where it would cost more to license Real than to develop your own. Of course then they could tell Real this, but the nastyheads would consider that threatening, so they just have to go ahead with it anyway. Puts things into a weird situation. |

FinancialWiz - "they have a responsibility to ensure that competition continues in other markets by ensuring that distribution methods are equitable for other software vendors."
The key here is that equitable only means "you cannot block", it doesn't mean "you have to give the same access". |

Isn't Adam saying that the bad press outweighs the threat posed by these alternatives though? That's how I read it--not that he's some crazy communist, but that he sees a public perception benefit from MS creating relationships to bundle these third parties while the threat or harm to their own products would either be minimal or nonexistent.
I don't see that as anti-MS or insane; I see that as boldy confident and pro-MS. |

| FW, there is a big difference. If you don't want Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player, you don't have to buy Windows. There are alternatives. Real and AOL have managed to write their software for many platforms which shows they are quite capable companies. I see no reason that they should be given a blessing of inclusion with Windows. I would actually be tempted to look elsewhere for an OS if those applications were included with Windows. |
