Mystery Man Revealed in Microsoft Xbox Hack Contest | |

A longtime Microsoft Corp opponent has emerged as the mystery backer and mastermind behind a contest that offers $200,000 to anyone who successfully hacks into the software giant's Xbox (news - web sites) video game console, a top technology news Web Site reported. Michael Robertson, a former dot-com entrepreneur and now chief executive of U.S. software company Lindows.com, revealed himself as the anonymous donor and contest's creator in an interview on Thursday with CNET News.com. His identity was first revealed on SourceForge, a site where developers congregate to share tips on developing so-called open-source software projects. | ||

"I think Xbox sets a dangerous precedent," he told CNET News.com. That darn Microsoft and their insidious plans. I am so glad that Sony and their PlayStation are not trying the same thing. I am so happy that other game concole creators are not trying to control the market. |

Ok, think about it.
Why do you think Microsoft decided to not make the XBox a general purpose computer? Why not give it the added functions of WebTV at least? They could have easily done this if they had wanted to, don't you think? It's pretty simple... because doing so would really piss off the PC OEMs. So they have crippled the XBox to insure companies like Dell that they aren't infringing into their markets. These Linux people, building their little solution doesn't hurt Microsoft, it hurts the PC OEMs. Microsoft could care less. But like I have said in the past Linux is about being negative. |

Right on sodablue. But I wouldn't be surprised by a little infringing into Dell land with XBox 2. We shall see.

This project is such a huge waste of effort and talent. Their goal is to enable an operable DESKTOP Linux system onto an XBox. They want to connect digital cameras, scanners, keyboards, etc.
Just look at how absurd this is... To connect a USB device, it is as simple as 1) buying an XBox connector cable (and give MSFT your $ as this is a high profit margin item) 2) "All you have to do is CUT both cables and connect the Xbox console connector to the USB A connector by soldering the wires with the same color together. The yellow one can just be left" Oh, and then buy and solder on a mod chip and load software software software. Do they seriously think this project will ever result in anything USEFUL? This is just typical Open-Source BS. Too bad these obviously talented people don't spend the same time working for a charity or something useful. Typical techno-nerds without even an ounce of business acumen. No one in the group asking the critical question of WHY! My site just passed 4 million hits per day, running Microsoft across the board. And for those that have been reading awhile, that traffic is twice what it was just 6 months ago. And IIS, ASP, SQL Server handled the growth beautifully. |

| Yeah, hippie, I have no idea why Jagged mentions how the DMCA mentions violating copyright, and then equates that with a licensing agreement. Do you? But that's the sort of logic that you get from softies, and which they think is brilliant. Oh well, whatever. |
