The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web Server software usage on Internet connected computers. We collect and collate as many hostnames providing an http service as we can find, and systematically poll each one with an HTTP request for the server name. In the November 2002 survey we received responses from 35,686,907 sites. Approximately 8% of Microsoft-IIS sites tested in 2001 had RDS open to the public; in 2002 this has fallen to around 5%. This fall can be largely explained by the gradual migration of sites to Microsoft-IIS/5.0, where RDS is not enabled by default. Almost no Microsoft-IIS/5.0 sites we have tested were offering RDS and the proportion of Microsoft-IIS/4.0 sites offering RDS is fairly stable at around one in four. | ||

I must put my standard disclaimer on these results like I do every month:
Netcraft's numbers are not obtained scientifically. The results cannot be obtained scientifically because there are countless ways a site can spoof the type of web server it's using. Not to mention that Netcraft does not weigh it's numbers based on usage of the site, nor does it take into count that each host on a hosting server is NOT a seperate instance of that web server software, so the numbers are horribly skewed if not completely bogus. |

bas, Even in months where IIS was up and Apache was way down, I have still criticized the Netcraft numbers. They do not release their collection methods, and when viewing random sites on their website, the information is usually wrong or contains bugs.
Add to this that many sites spoof or hide their web server identity, and that Netcraft purposely skews the results by counting virtual hosts as real hosts, and all you have is a bunch of numbers that mean nothing. Netcraft, however, DOES have an anti-MS bias (past evaluations have made insults of Microsoft which is completely unprofessional), and it calls into question the numbers completely. I assume you're referring to the MiddleWare numbers. Everything was fully disclosed and available and repeatable. If you question the numbers, you can do your own test. With the Netcraft numbers, since they won't release any information about how they collect their data, it's entirely possible that they just make up the numbers to further their agenda. |
