Much of the ill will surrounds the recent release of a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer, which also contains a fix for a newly discovered critical vulnerability. Some users contacted by eWeek last week said that when they installed the patch on machines running Windows 98 and IE 5.5, the PCs failed to reboot and instead returned a "scandisk" error message. When the users tried to bring the machine up in safe mode, it froze, preventing further action. | ||

A scandisk "error message" as they call it suggests the the machine failed to shutdown properly.
This is often caused by one or more applications refusing to quit during the shutdown process, thereby forcing the OS to manually kill them. If it's a user application that refuses to shutdown, it is unlike to cause any problems. If Windows process refuses, especially one that is responsible for important shutdown "stuff", this can cause the problems described. |

"Dropping support is stupid, they should just test the patches a lot more then they do now before making them public. That would save them alot of problems."
Yep. And they should release patches faster too. Strange how the two complaints don't work together. |

I hate to tell you this, but Microsoft does quite a bit of testing on security patches. Heck, they have a system which they refer to as RAID which has a wide array of differing computer setups which they test the stuff on, and then they have a team of people that's main purpose is to beat the hell out of it, trying to make it screw up.
The fact remains that over 90% of the market is on Widows, and it's impossible to test every possible setup. Sometimes something just screws up, plan and simple. |

so you bought a PC in 1996 that came with Windows 95. When Win98 came out you did an "upgrade" to it. Then 98SE came out and you upgraded (over the top of it again because it is "recomended"). and over the last few years you've patched and upgraded IE from 4.x to 6 with every SP that came along. you didnt upgrade to ME because you're a PC expert now and heard it was crap from some web page. but now a patch (probably somewhere around #500) messed up your PC!
Wow, I'm surprised- i figured that would have happened a long time ago! as far as all the other crap that people complain about in Windows XP: since it came out i have had 1 stop error ( a very bad driver that should never have been released). |
