Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about Microsoft's new operating system called Windows XP, set to envelop the computing masses in October. Since Microsoft and others will spend about $500 million convincing you that you can't live without it, the obvious question is whether you need it. The easiest and most accurate answer is: It depends on who you are and what you want the Internet to do for you. Win XP under the hood isn't very interesting granted #3. However this is a *big* upgrade asothers mentioned it brings the power of NT to everyone. That is a very big deal. Dual Head Support is the biggest thing for me. In XP I finally have true dualhead using my Matrox G450. (Dualhead is running two monitors on one computer). Add to that remote desktop, remote assistance, built in zipping utility, cd-burner, copy floppy using only one drive, updated interface (I don't care what some people say, updating the interface is even a bigger deal to users than changing things under the hood), etc . . . . This is great software and it is the best thing MS has ever put out. So there!

The points of these comments can be put simply
*Is XP an updated 2000 clone? *Is anything actually new to the user? *And do we want it? For most we will get it just because it is an update, for others the interface and the rest just for new (hardware and software) support. But and a big BUT, can you really live with out it? | When it comes down to it do you really need a computer, a rolex, a car, a house? People lived for centuries without these things but I would be mad if I had to give all of those things up... |

#13. How many people need the NT kernel?
Well that's simple: We need to eliminate the world of Win9x, period. Therefore everybody needs it. Not just the hardcore, but ever man woman and child in America needs it. Win9x is just such a major support headache, I can't imagine anybody recommending it in this day and age. Yes WinXP is not a major change over Win2k. We should have been pushing people to move to Win2k last year instead of letting them buy WinMe. |

| Well I am reading this and I am using XP so there 21 :p !!! You are correct there is no real need for XP. It is a *luxury*. And I for one would really like to have the corvette of operating systems. Wouldn't really mind having a real corvette either though... |
