Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer v1.1 (for IT Professionals) | |

As part of Microsoft's Strategic Technology Protection Program, and in response to direct customer need for a streamlined method of identifying common security misconfigurations, Microsoft has developed the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). Version 1.1 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MBSA runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems and will scan for common security misconfigurations in the following products: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000 and 2002. MBSA also scans for missing security updates for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, IIS, SQL, Exchange, IE, and Windows Media Player. | ||

bas - You've never heard of Akamai before?
Microsoft has been using them for about two years now. They used to use someone else before that, but I think they went poof. |

Rats, didn't even make it through TWO posts that time without it dumping my login. Grrr....
Anyway, this is hilarious! I ran it, and the first thing I got was a Norton AntiVirus warning saying that this was a malicious script, and that it recommended I stop it. LOL! TL |

This thing is pretty cool. I just scanned all the desktops and servers at home with one push of the button and no other interaction from me.

bas - Yes, unfortunately Netcraft isn't able to measure past loadbalancers... so they don't accurately count web servers used in production environments. That's likely a large part of the reason Microsoft doesn't show up higher in their stats.
TechLarry - Hmm, I don't have any problems with login info to activewin. The username/password is just stored in a cookie, it's pretty simple. Maybe you have some setting eating cookies? |

From Netscraft's FAQ: "Webservers that operate behind a caching system, load balancer, reverse proxy server or a firewall may sometimes report the operating system of the intermediate machine. Hence reports of 'Microsoft/IIS on Linux' may indicate that either the web server is behind a Linux server that is acting as a reverse proxy, or has configured the Akamai caching system such that the first request to the site goes to one of Akamai's servers [which run Linux], or as in the case of www.walmart.com has been configured to send a misleading signature.
MS's servers are no longer runing any of the *nix variants, but the firewall might, or the load balancer, or some other intermediary computer that they can't replace yet. For instance if you were to NMAP my IP for my home machine, youd swear that it was a Unix box, or at the very least a Unix Switch--but it ain't. Same deal with ad.law10.hotmail.com. It's not that big of a thing. |

it was and is Conxion, they are still a company and still used for some of microsofts high demand, high megabyte downloads; however it would appear they are transitioning to Akamai.
Probably cause Conxion kept leaking stuff before offical release dates or there contract was just up and ms brought it inhouse on akamai hardware. |
