Like It or Not, Microsoft Has a Vision | |

For many people, especially lots of techies, nothing is more offensive than praise for Microsoft. After I wrote in this column two weeks ago that I had liked Bill Gates' speech at Comdex and found in it several impressive Microsoft innovations, I was besieged with e-mail from readers who called me crazy, biased, corrupt, or all three. I was clearly understating the matter when I wrote in the original column that many readers would disagree. At least vitriol can inspire entertaining prose. Here are excerpts from five different e-mails I received: "Get a clue. Microsoft just sits around on its mountain of cash tinkering with other peoples' ideas which it has stolen and uses its market clout to shove the original and real innovators out the door." | ||

Linux, perhaps... but MySQL? MySQL is a JOKE to any serious developer. It's a glorified text file database. If you want a quality, free, and open source RDBMS, go for PostgresSQL (sp?). It has FAR more features than MySQL. MySQL is popular, yes... but it's hardly competition for SQL Server. |

Please provide a link to a source of those numbers? This much is for sure. Windows XP does NOT have 95% market share. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the majority of computer users are business users, and businesses have NOT moved to XP in droves as their corporate standard. Windows 2000 rules the roost here, with a healthy dose of Windoes 98 still firmly entrenched. TL |

I think it's clear the Linux zealots are starting to feel the heat of being wrong for so many years. They're now acting like the Amiga zealots, responding to articles pointing out their weaknesses like cornered badgers.
In another year or two of this behavior, journalists will just stop reporting about Linux. Just as they did with the Amiga and OS/2. |

Perhaps not, but I'm sure you saw my post. Seems to me that what "everybody knows" isn't always what actually is, and your beliefs are case in point. |

| I think Microsoft will continue to be around just as IBM is still around, however, they will quit being on top once Balmer and Gates are out of the picture, unless they can somehow find 2 guys who are anywhere near as commited to their job. |

And Microsoft is exceptionally good at adapting. In the last 5 years, MS has gotten stronger because it's been able to keep pace and exceed it. Each new version of their software (whether it's Windows, Exchange, SQL Server, Office, etc.) is consistently better, sometimes in a huge way, and most often better than all rivals (nothing can touch Office, Exchange or SQL Server, IMO). Microsoft has also expanded very intelligently. When Microsoft announced that it was getting into computer games, everyone snickered. It was almost overnight, though, that you knew that a game published by MS had to be good. It was the same when Microsoft moved into the computer hardware arena: snickers and cynicism. Today, many people swear by MS mice, keyboard, joysticks, and the like. When MS expands, it does so extremely intelligently. Sure, it's largely because "they want to dominate every area of computing," but that should be the goal of every company, and it's that singular goal that pushes MS to be the best at everything that they do. MS has sorta stumbled out of the gate with the Xbox, their entry into the console world, but just watch; I suspect they'll have a majority share of it within just a couple of years. When it looks like MS has stumbled and should pull out of something, they don't just throw in the towel. They re-group, re-invest and fight their way out of the corner. They have the business mentality that every business needs. Most businesses would cut their losses and retreat; not Microsoft. Microsoft adapts extremely well, and that's why they're still on top and only getting stronger. Eventually, they'll lose that position, but, as long as they continue to adapt and expand intelligently, that time won't be anytime soon. |
