Mac Loyalists: Don't Tread on Us | |

One of the defining characteristics of the Mac community is its loyalty to Apple. Through thick and thin, Apple's customers stick by the company. This summer, Apple upset the Mac community by suddenly announcing a $100 annual subscription fee for its .Mac online services, which were formerly free. On top of this, an upgrade to OS X -- the kind of upgrade users usually don't pay for -- would cost $130. The new pricing policies prompted howls of protest. Websites, online forums and news stories were full of acrimonious kvetching about "gouging" and "bait-and-switch." Long-time users launched petitions, fired off angry letters and for the first time in years, there were lots of threats to leave the Mac platform altogether. But despite the howling, there's been no mass exodus to Windows. The opposite, in fact, seems to be true. Anecdotal evidence points to more and more people switching to the Mac. | ||

HAHAHAHAHAHA oh... man... I ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH can't... AHAHAHAHAHAHAH stop laugh... HAHAHAHAHA ing. Ok, my composure is back. Seeing as how Wired is a "Macs Rule and everything other than MS is good" magazine, this statement is nothing short of hilarious. I will continue laughing now... |

Does someone have more than anecdotal evidence? Sodajerk? I fear that the "anecdotal evidence" is a couple of the author's coworkers bought new Macs.
Incidently, I find it ironic how the Mac faithful look at their machines as "It's mine. It's personal. This is mine and you can't taint it." I remember when I bought my Amiga--when I used a Mac, I remember how hopelessly limiting and out of control it felt. The system wanted you to work the way it wanted you to work. No options, no alternatives. The Amiga didn't make you jump through hoops to do what you wanted, and if you wanted to do it another way, it didn't try to stop you. The landscape has changed a lot, but I still feel that way moreso with Windows than I do with a Mac. And, if they really want a machine that's subject to their control, they could try Linux, where they can even modify any or all of source code. |

daz, you don't read much Wired or Mac press, do you? Wired has mostly been ragging on the Mac community for many months now with pieces very siilar to this and only focusing on the true, true zealotry of the minority. This doesn't seem to be the "Mac Rulez" theme you are speaking of, it seems to me to be the "Mac Zealots are weirdo idiots to look at with disdain" message. |

| I can't stand Wired's magazine, while they do have some cool stuff in it, 3/4 of it is pure ads, that's worse than my hotmail inbox. |

I use both. No big deal.
Each has it's strength's and weaknesses. Both have plenty to complain about, and both have plenty to commend them. I also just bought an iPod, and I think it's the slickest piece of consumer electronics I've ever spent money on. TL |

There are several reasons why I use Windows instead of Macs:
1.) Macs are slower. Case closed. COUNTLESS benchmarks provide massive evidence for this conclusion. The only recent benchmarks I've seen that show Macs on top were done with special copies of Photoshop (which aren't publicly available) that only ran a very specific subset of functions that concentrated on integer operations. 2.) Macs don't have the hardware selection that PCs do. Case in point, the Geforce line and the new Raedeons. Macs always seem to get yesterday's hardware from 3rd parties. Is the Geforce 4 or the Raedeon 9700 available for the Mac? Nope. 3.) Macs don't have the same software selection that PCs do. Do they have most of the business software I use? Almost. Everything except for VS.NET. But they only have a small subset of the games... again, they get yesterday's games. 4.) Macs are MUCH more expensive. Macs cost WAY more for MUCH less beef. Why would I pay more than $3,000 for a Mac that's about as fast as a $1200 PC? 5.) Bad past experiences. I went to a high school with 100% Macs. I ended up becoming a pseudo-faculty member and school administrator, and the Macs were hellish to maintain. Constant crashes, difficulties in security, etc. I'm sure things are much better with OS 10+, but I have no desire to try it out because I'm very happy with Win2k/XP. Really, the only thing the Mac has going for it is that it's damn pretty. I love playing around with OS 10+, but I wanna work and play my games too. Sorry Apple, but you're about 5 years too late to grab me away from the PC. |

If more and more people are switching to Macs, why has Apple's unit sales (and marketshare) continued to decline precipitously? New Mac users = more sales. So where are the sales? I mean, come on, Palm sells more handhelds per quarter than Apple can move Macs. This post was edited by Foo_Fighter on Wednesday, December 04, 2002 at 12:35. |
