A growing rift among members of the Liberty Alliance authentication project is placing the technology's future in question. At the core of the problem is exactly where to target the single-sign-on technology in the face of stiff and growing client-side competition from Microsoft Corp.'s Passport service.

"Passport has been a huge failure, really. Microsoft managed to get tens of millions of users to register but only because it's become mandatory.
"I won't say Liberty will solve all of these problems, but the focus is on heterogeneous environments, and Liberty has a better shot at that space than Microsoft. Liberty has a ways to go, and it could be that Sun is just trying to lower expectations because it's taking longer than we thought.
They have produced nothing while MS has Passport in use but yet Passport is a "huge failure". They can't even decide on their own direction but yet Passport is a failure.

On a follow up note. I recently signed on to Citi Bank online and noticed that they have a way to tie your Citi Bank account to Passport. Even though I have a Passpord account some how I didn't like the idea of tieing the two together just yet. Has anyone here tied their Passport account to anything financial yet?

If my bank (citibank) tired to make that mandatory I' close my 22 year old account with them..
Niether system will have wide spread adoption as the mass public does not trust either system... and for good reason.

RedHook/KnightHawk - Can you explain to me what particular risk you see with that?

soda, I just have a phobia of tieing my hotmail account access to my financial data. I am sure that you can prove that it is no more or less secure than the current Citi Bank security model. And that it only provides single sign on/access points (which I see as usefull). But I am not sure that I am ready for that when it comes to my money and identity. I have a yahoo, hotmail, NY Times account and they all have the same user name and password.
But to answer your question I just don't want someone to get access to one account and have my entire fortune which rivals Bill Gates at their finger tips.

I second sodablue's question.
I haven't tied passport to my BankofAmerica account, but I would if it were available.
Gents, we are simply talking about something akin to using a single NT login within your corporate network. I have a login that I use to access multiple servers at the office. Without that ability, I would spend alot of time managing my logins for the dozens of systems that I need access to.
Passport simply takes that level of functionality and applies it to websites. Its awesome, IMO. And other vendors agree... thats why the liberty project exists... because there is alot of value in that functionality.

RedHook - Well if you were really concerned you wouldn't use the same username/password for your yahoo, hotmail or NY Times accounts.
Passport is no more or less secure than what people are doing now. I see most of the arguments against Passport as simply FUD.

soda, your points are valid. I just wanted to hear from people that have tied passport to financial accounts. And clearly you have, cool.
I just had concerns about leaving my windows instant messenger logged in and someone getting access to my accounts.

FinancialWiz - "Can you guess why?"
My guess would be you're using Unix servers, and it's too much work to do single-signon, so you've pushed off the work to your endusers. That's typically how IT departments function.
Having multiple usersnames/passwords for different locations is only more secure if the passwords are completely different for each location, and are complex enough to not allow easy guessing... but simple enough where you can remember them without writing them down.
Now the problem with the web today is that the rules are different between various servers. I can't use the same username for each web site, because it's already been used, or my username is too complex or whatever. My biggest gripe is password restrictions. I prefer to use a good strong password, but Unix sites are strangely limited to only 8 characters. So then I'm faced with either using a weak password everywhere, or using different passwords.
So really I now have a situation where all my username/password combinations are written down. Which is reasonably secure for me, since I live by myself and I can rely somewhat on physical security to protect them.

"I just had concerns about leaving my windows instant messenger logged in and someone getting access to my accounts."
That's not the way passport works.
When you use a different service, it requires you to log in again. The lone exception to this is Messenger and Hotmail.
Messenger passes the existing credentials to Hotmail because they "know" about each other. This is only possible when it's coded explicitly into the application.
For instance, I can be logged into hotmail... but I still have to log in again when I go to my "My Ebay" page.

RedHook - "I just had concerns about leaving my windows instant messenger logged in and someone getting access to my accounts. "
I agree, but I think that's an implementation issue. There is no reason why the Citibank website should not prompt you to retype your password. That seems to be the way most Passport sites work that are protecting secure info.

I've spoken to a lot of Internet users out there, and basically when they have to sign up or subscribe to websites, they use the same password ...so I don't see a problem with Passport. Passport is a tool that just make it easier for you to login different sites that utilized the technology.
Soda, RedHook ...Citibank will ask you to enter you Passport password for authentication.
By the way Soda ...you're on a roll. GO FOR IT! =)

rommels: ah, gotcha
Where is this link Microsoft Passport to your Citibank account page? Is it only good for bank accounts and not for loans, credit cards, etc. ?
