Microsoft to buy Sega? Rumors fly | |

Two news services yesterday reported that Tokyo-based videogame maker Sega Corp. may be acquired by Microsoft Corp. Neither company, including San Francisco-based subsidiary SEGA of America Inc., could be reached for comment. | ||

This is great if true, although rumors of MS buying Sega have been going around since MS provided CE on the Dreamcast.
As a Sega console owner (and XBOX), it would be nice if Sega no longer had the threat of financial problems as they have had in the past, and MS currently publishes many of their best titles for the XBOX. |

#4 - It wasn't bad hardware that caused the demise of Sega in the console market, it was... drum roll... COMPETITION.
Sega was simply unable to sell as many consoles as Nintendo for a wide variety of reasons (including less powerful hardware), but mostly because of Nintendo's marketing, games, and customer loyalty. I used to be a major Nintentdo-head... all Nintendo, all the time. In grade school, I would actually have offical class debates discussing Nintendo vs. Sega. It was quite entertaining. |

Yeah,
It is a shame that Sega finally got some good hardware with the dream cast and pulled the plug on that. That was the issue with Sega, put out one line of hardware barely get it going and then pull the plug on it. Much the same as Atari before it faded away. (atari had other issues but one of them was expensive hardware that didn't deliver) Not to date myself. but I went through the orginal Atari 2600, through the second generation of the Atari 2600:) Of course there was the intelivision from Mattel I believe, and Colecovision egads better stop going on. (I had a few of the systems before coleco vision from the mid 70's but I was really young then) El |

Hehe... I'll now be entertaining guesses at my age. Here are some hints: 1.) I've never seen the Red Sox win the World Series. 2.) I have seen the Patriots win the Super Bowl once. 3.) I've never seen the Bruins win the Stanley Cup. 4.) I've seen the Celtics win 3 NBA Championships. That narrows it down a bit. :-) |

You could've at least tied it to events in the tech industry, RMD. I think I'm the least likely person of all the people that I know, to know (or care) when even one of any of the events you mentioned occurred.
Ugh, it looks like I'll have to do some sports (double ugh!) searches tomorrow. Oh, to clarify, are we to assume that "seen" means that it happened in your lifetime and "never seen" means it didn't happen in your lifetime? I could say that I've never seen almost every sporting event of the last several years, because I don't watch them, not because they didn't occur. |

| J, you New Zealanders aren't the only ones out in the cold with American sports trivia clues. I can tell you from member the launch dates of most Microsoft products of the last few years, but I haven't a clue what goes on in the world of sports. |

This rumor has been on again off again for years. I, honestly, thought it would happen long ago. It makes alot of sense. Sega compliments XBox in alot of ways... with well-known characters, appeal to YOUNG gamers, appeal to JAPANESE gamers.
- Sega is hurting a bit financially. Obviously, Microsoft can help out there. - Microsoft is hurting badly in Japan. Sega can help there. - Sega is hurting especially in the US... where XBox is a solid #2 player in front of Nintendo. - Sega/Microsoft have been getting much closer lately. Microsoft bundles 2 Sega games with XBox now. - Sega seems like its already aligning itself with XBox. Remember that just last week, Sega announced no more development of their sports titles for the Gamecube, but that it would continue developing those games for XBox. - The only problem is the price. Its gonna be HIGH. Not an insurmountable thing, obviously... but it'll show just how interested MSFT is in making a profit anytime SOON. |

| I thought I read that those "rumors" of MSFT buying Sega that surfaced early in the year were quite true. Microsoft made at least one bid for Sega in 2002... where they would buy controlling interest in Sega and Sega would buy controlling interest in Square. |

Todd, technically the GeForceFX has already launched. The event video is at http://www.geforcefx.com
Product should appear in limited quantities this month and in volume in January/February. What I find cool is that the benchmarks and demos at the launch were done on the first silicon Rev. A01. |
