Microsoft has been venturing into enemy territory in its latest bid to win converts from the Linux community. The incursion comes in the form of an advertisement Microsoft has purchased on Slashdot, an insider web site for Linux geeks which claims 50 million page views per month. Microsoft's ad touts its Visual Studio.NET integrated development environment. The tool set is the company's flagship IDE for building Windows-based applications. | ||

Wow... talk about a huge waste of money. If anything, they're HELPING the "enemy" by contributing money to their propaganda machine while at the same time giving all their readers a good laugh.
Any Slashdot reader who clicks on the banner will do so for one of two reasons: 1.) To gather ammo for a sarcastic remark that degrades Microsoft. 2.) Because they're actually interested in it... in which case, they're almost certainly not an avid Slashdot reader, and have probably already heard about it or are using it to begin with. |

daz, that's quite a generalization there. I guess by your logic anyone who disagrees with your position must therefor be a Linux zealot. What a load of crap!
The issue with eagle's comments (and I am certainly not a Linux zealot saying this) is that they have little if any substance. Further, the predictions about Microsoft's glorious future and Linux's demise are not based in reality. I'm not saying that Microsoft's future won't be glorious and that Linux won't soon meet its demise (maybe, maybe not), I'm saying that eagle never shows support for his arguments. As a result, I find reading his comments a waste of time. Just a hunch, but I think kaboom thinks similarly. |

Actually /. has changed quite a bit of the past year or two and gives an example of how clearly the open source community is losing whatever battle they think they are in. The posts to the site have gotten more and more desperate to accuse Microsoft of something, and it's also abundantly apparent that they filter out bad news regarding Linux.
It's interesting. They used to be willing to be far more honest back in '98/'99 when Linux was more popular. |

linuxhippie - Perhaps popular was the wrong word. Hyped would be more appropriate. Granted, linux still get's a lot of hype, but most of the arguments for it's use have been invalidated over recent years by improvements to Windows. i.e. stability, scalability, etc.
I don't see the demand for Linux today that you used to see back in '99 with the rise of ISPs and dot coms, etc. |

For Linux to succeed, the simple common things have to be simple and common. linuxhippie - I don't know. I just don't see it happening. I was an Amiga owner, and we laughed at both the Mac and Windows. Didn't help much in the marketplace. Linux up to this point has been lucky. If people want to see it succeed in taking a large chunk of Microsoft's market, it's development is going to have to be centralized under one company. You need someone to drive out a vision, and then hand out the hard tasks to make that happen. But that will work only if the company can hire developers, and you can only hire developers if you have money coming in... and I still don't see how you can make money selling Linux. I guess the point is, the biggest problem with Linux is that it competes with itself, but not in a good way. kaboom - Ok, now what about the TV capture software for my ATI All-in-Wonder card? I'm amazed at just how easy this was to do with XP. Oh, and BobSmith was talking about kaboom., not kaboom. This post was edited by sodablue on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at 10:41. |

baarod - Um, if we did a select distinct on the users we'd likely discover that a great many of the registered users have aliases. No, I don't have evidence of that, but that's just a hunch that my ears have picked up. I'm not saying I think your idea is bad, I'm just saying that I think it would greatly reduce our numbers. |
