Steven A. Ballmer, the C.E.O. of Microsoft, is a freak for numbers. He doesn't just think about financials. He has memorized virtually every sales number for every one of his divisions, quarter by quarter, for years. This is a man who has favorite spreadsheet cells. His own schedule is broken out in a spreadsheet, and in his office on the top floor of Building 34 on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Wash., he happily offers to show it to me. Microsoft has how many products compared to Apple? Microsoft has more than 130 different server products alone, not to mention desktop OSes, productivity software, game software, development software, etc.
At least Bill and Steve are on the top 10 richest people list. :-) |

This is not totally true. Though it doesn't happen all the time, Bill was at a computer at the Windows XP launch, the MSN 8 launch, and the Tablet PC launch. They usually leave product demos to the product managers (or one of the marketing guys), though, with Bill/Steve handling the keynote. The demonstrations are usally scripted, requiring interaction between Bill/Steve and the demonstrator(s). Often, as seen at Comdex, there are a number of products (both hardware and software) being shown, and set changes for each product group. Who better to demo those products than the people that developed them? |
