In a bid to gain a toehold in the desktop PC market, Linux vendor Lindows has released a new version of its operating system. The company claims Lindows 3.0 is a low-cost, easy-to-use OS that is compatible with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows file formats. Version 3.0 is also the first Lindows OS to be available as a stand-alone product. Prior to the new release, consumers could only purchase Lindows bundled on PCs. "Until now, the value of Linux has been unavailable to 99 percent of the world to experience firsthand," Lindows CEO Michael Robertson said. | ||

| Black, I can get the latest Red Hat (or any other vendor's) ISO for free right now. What's the point of paying for LindowsOS? That just sounds foolish to me. And if it can change at some point then I'm even more annoyed with it. |

I'm all for supporting Microsoft, but I think you need a reality check. It is possible to support Microsoft and still see things as they really are. If find it rather hard to believe that Linux doesn't represent any value proposition considering the companies that are associating themselves with it - IBM, Oracle, Amazon.com, etc. Some of the largest companies are finding Linux valuable. There endorsement alone is enough for me to know that Linux doesn't stay around only because of unproven hype. Obviously there is some value there. |

| Maybe I am one of the 1%... but I have been playing with this since version 2.0 side by side with Windows XP. I like and prefer Windows XP but... I can see where Lindows OS could be a viable alternative in the future. Its easy to set up and get started if you have a computer that has common used peripherals that support it. It's also been pretty solid IMO on my machine, but then again... so has Windows XP. I can see why Microsoft could be fearful of this OS. Given time for Lindows to mature and catch up to where Microsoft is today... it could be very competitive... or at least give Microsoft a healthy competitor to drive prices down on their OS's and Office software. |

| m, it seems to me that they'd have to work much faster than Microsoft is to catch up with them. Microsoft is absolutely moving full steam ahead with future versions of Windows. In about two years we'll be nearing the launch of "Longhorn" which will be a major upgrade from Windows XP. Personally, I don't forsee (but I'm very fallable) any Linux distro catching up. |

#20 Best Buy for me is 400 miles away. Alternative is Staples which won't sell the Student and Teacher version of Office XP without proof of being either a student or teacher.
Which is the way I thought it was supposed to be. #21 All I was saying is that this could be a viable alternative in the future. And that all depends on how the developers of the software decide to proceed with it. I doubt very much that any OS alternative will advance as fast as Microsoft, but we'll see. Personally, I would like to see a healthy competition for OS's, whether it is between Microsoft and IBM or Digital Research or Linux or Unix or any new ones that may pop up in the next few years. |

mfaccone - OS/2 could be a viable alternative in the future as well.
As far as Linux, yes it could be something better. However in order for it to become that, all these disparate initiatives need to come together and work as one focus. That's not going to happen, so as a result it's always going to elude them. |

| By the time they get to Lindows XP, Windows will be at v10 and be called something horrible like Windows .NET version 10 version XP^5 version 2015. |
