Microsoft will limit use of 'critical' security bulletins | |

Microsoft Corp., which is trying to improve the security of its software, will limit the use of "critical" security bulletins to customers after users complained they were bombarded with too many high-level alerts. Microsoft will change the services that alert and provide fixes to users of the Windows operating system and other programs to make it clearer which threats need to be addressed immediately, said Mike Nash, vice president of Microsoft's security business. Microsoft has issued 64 software patches and advisories this year in a campaign to improve the security of its programs after vulnerabilities in Windows and other programs led to millions of dollars of damage last year. | ||

I agree with you, Bob. 64 in a year is about one per week (365/64=5.7 days per alert). They don't break the numbers down by platform. I'm sure not everyone is affected by every one of the 64 alerts. If it is a severe issue, it needs to be fixed and users need to be alerted, no matter if there have been 6 alerts this year or 600.
If you limit the alerts, one of two things will happen: a. the anti-MS types will say it is a conspiracy to hide the true number of issues; b. users will complain they are not being properly notified of severe issues. Da**ed if you do, da**ed if you don't. You can't please all of the people all of the time. If it is a severe issue, alert it. |

Maybe I am missing something! Why would you want to limit the number? I am agree with #1 and #2, issue them as soon as a fix is available. Ideally they should be bunched together but that is what service packs are for. I for one keep my PCs current, I install everything that the update screen says that I need (except that analog driver update).
In the future I am going to bet that someone says that MS is not issusing critical update frequent enough. MS is damned if they do and damned if they don't |

| Maybe they should do what Redhat and Suse does... ignore the security problems and then just silently fix them in the next release. |

| gg - Compare the versions of KDE out on kde.org with regards to their security bulletins with the lack of any such bulletins on the linux vendors sites. |
