The European Commission is considering a new antitrust case against Microsoft, suspecting the software giant is trying to leverage its dominance of PC operating systems into the market for mobile phone software, say sources familiar with the regulator. Commission spokesperson Amelia Torres denied that companies in the mobile phone market have complained to the Brussels-based competition authority. "I am not aware of any complaints," she said. But she declined to comment on whether the European Commission might open a new investigation on its own initiative. | ||

#5 I was in europe to vote and you do have to register to vote. there is so much control over this that you cannot vote outside your place of residence unless you go to the city hall of your district and apply for permission to do so. belto... | #15 In Europe you don't register to vote, it is part of your civil rights and you begin to receive your certificate by mail as soon as you reach the legal age to vote; less than ever you have to register as Republican, Democrat or Indipendent as I had to do here, your political orientations are a private aspect of your life you don't have to disclose unless you wish to do it. It is true that you have to vote in the place where you elect your legal residence but I don't see what is the problem, if you move somewhere else you just register in the new place. |

Fritzly - The US election system is pretty screwed up right now. It's sort of like .Net and Java. Since we were the first, everybody else learned from our mistakes and came up with better implementations. :)
The 2000 election did bring attention to many of the flaws, and this resulted in a Election Reform law being passed just last month. It has a number of provisions that should help make voter registration consistent, as well as how ballots are cast and counted. I live in Minnesota which has tended to have sensible election laws. We allow same day voter registration, for instance. As such we have generally led the nation in voter turnout, usually above 60%. The nation as a whole has less than 50% voter turnout. Some states like California in 2002 have as low as 30%. It's pathetic as well as bizarre. |

z00ker - Perhaps you should focus on getting daz, mhfm and mooresa56 convinced to stop bringing up their ignorant political views in a technical forum. You might have better luck, and it would certainly do more for the quality of the discussion in this forum.
mooresa56 - BTW, if you think "liberal" ideas are out of favor, I encourage you to try to ban abortion, freedom of speech and push religion down our throats. We'll see just how accepted your ideas are. |

How is it AT ALL possible to leverage a "monopoly" on desktop PCs to gain market share in the mobile phone OS market.... unless they started bundling a smartphone running their software on it with Windows.... |

The theory goes: desktop OSes/Suites are 98% Windows/Office which creates a dependency on Exchange on the backend. Titanium is being built to ease integration with SmartPhone OS 2002 or whatever name it has this week. Thats fine with the EU if Microsoft gives Nokia/Symbian/etc... equal opportunity to develop the hooks for their mobile OSes; otherwise, MS will unfairly be leveraging its software to create an incentive to use Smartphones and CE devices and to discourage using Symbian/Palm/etc... products because they cannot be integrated easily into Exchange Titanium. This is of particular issue in Europe where Symbian already has a substantial share of the market. If they and others are being denied the opportunity to hook into Exchange, that's exactly the kind of case Europe likes.
So that's the theory. gg--if that was the case, the EU would be suing them for every other market attempt besides Windows and Office... lame theory. |

yeah, soda, it did. But that's the U.S. case. That settlement and the exact intent and letter of that settlement doesn't necessarily answer for this situation. Nor does European law work the same as American law. Anyway the interfaces... these are actually a limited subset of communication protocols and some media/OS/shall-we-call-it middleware-even if-it-aint APIs, with a host of loopholes a la security and dependencies on 3rd party software, and doesn't specifically address the client/server interaction. This is a key concern of the yet to be determined EU antitrust case involving tying Exchange and media software to Win Servers....
What's of note is that someone must have complained about Titanium (Nokia, anyone?), and the way the EU is, I presume the complainers would have had to have approached MS first if the EC were to consider it at all. No opinion on this yet really--just didn't want the misguided to think this was about the GUI of Exchange being similar to Outlook, or something as trivial as that. |
