The richest man in the world met with some of its poorest Monday, and pledged $100 million to fight the spread of AIDS in India. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates opened his four-day, controversy-laced visit to the South Asian nation by visiting HIV-positive patients in a private hospice. ``It's a very brave thing to speak out and it's a problem that needs a lot of brave people,'' Gates told Naveen Kumar, an HIV-positive man who told him how he was rejected by public-health facilities in India. | ||

Good donations, like these, coupled with the newly FDA approved 20-minute HIV test, will make detecting, eliminating, and treating the unfortunate who are afflicted all that much easier.

Ok where is Ted Turner?

Doggin - NEWS FLASH - most $ given to charity is a tax writeoff. SO WHAT? Do you use that as a reason NOT to give?
You say it as though that cheapens Bill's gift. It does not. I, for one, am glad that BillG gives money and resources like he does. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he has to. I'm just glad he chooses to do it. |

If I'm not mistaken Larry Ellison is also quite a philanthripist. He doesn't have quite as much money as Bill does, but he's still in the top 10.
Tax write off. I don't see your point. If I donote 1.00 to charity, I receive a .30 (depending on bracket, etc) deduction. So I spend a $1 to make $.30 ? Write off or not, it is still a large amount of money that he didn't have to spend which he did. For that, I say, Kudos to him. |
