Yes very much so. A genealogy program that I use uses Foxpro (since the dos days) Unfortantly without the full Unicode support in the Database it is becomeing a mute point. El |

Thanks, n. As soon as I've learned all there is to learn about .NET and SQL Server 2000, I'll think about FoxPro. For the time being, though, they serve me quite well. The one and only time I ever touched FoxPro was back in the summer of '95 setting up a temp db for boy scout summer camp. I'm not even sure if Microsoft owned it back then. The Master Genealogist, (and another program use VFP, although an earlier version)
MS bought Foxpro when it was still in DOS days (around 91 or 92 I believe) but they didn't really support the 32 bit platform until verison 6.0. Which is one of the reasons that it died or has died out. There are several older platforms that still use it, and MS has finally updated it and seems to be supporting it again. VFP7 was a large step forward, VFP8 seems to be even further forward. But without true UNICODE support, (meaning that the old dos code page implementation at the database level needs to be dropped. Or there will be very little chance for it to go forward. VFP9 is already on the drawing boards also. Hoping that it just moves over to the .net platform so that the UI can finally pull off the real platform. instead of a VM for Foxpro, and a VM for the others. (IOW imo one of the things that really slow down VFP was that it still handles all of the screen updates for itself. instead of offloading that to the system. | I'm not familiar with Master Genealogist. I was an alpha tester for Ancestral Quest 3.0 (which formed the basis of PAF 4.0) a few years back. I was wondering if you were using one of those that I worked on. My roommate at the time was one of the major coders of AQ, which is how I got the alpha job. I didn't think he used FP, but I wasn't sure. |
