Tablet PCs won't come cheap | |

When a new crop of tablet PCs debuts next week, they aren't likely to be cheap. Prices of tablet PC models from Acer, Toshiba and Viewsonic, posted on CompUSA's Web site this week, range from just over $2,000 to $2,500. Toshiba's new Portege 3505 Tablet PC, for example, was described as coming with a 12.1-inch screen, a 1.3GHz Pentium III processor from Intel, both 802.11 and Bluetooth wireless networking, 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. The 4-pound device will sell for $2,499, according to the site. The company may offer a couple of less-expensive models with less memory or smaller hard drives as well. | ||

for this being so great, why would the toshiba launch with a P3? This is a very bad sign for the tablet pc.

| I thought they were hoping to get these down to $500, at $2000, I could purchase a fantastic PC setup, let's hope these drop in the near future or they'll be doomed, especially with the poor specs.... |

Am I missing something?
Laptops cost more than desktops. Doesn't it stand to reason that a TabletPC would also cost more than a desktop? It seem reasonable that a TabletPC would be about the same if not more than an equivalent laptop. Why? Because it is a laptop and then some. Poor specs? Last time I checked a 1.3 GHz PIII, 802.11 and Bluetooth, with 512 RAM and 40 GB hard drive are anything but poor specs for a laptop. Certainly, it a mobile P4 would be better, but this is still a dang nice setup. |

| Mobile P3 consumes half the battery power of P4-Ms. I'll take any P3 notebooks over p4s. The performance gain from P4 is minimal but the battery life loss is huge. |

I would have to imagine the screen makes up a great deal of the cost. Not only are they TFT LCDs, but the input method is via a magnetic field (not a touch screen). I'm not sure how much that adds to the cost, but it's not your average LCD screen.
I am a bit disappointed that it's a 12" screen, though--that's going to seem pretty small coming from a 15". |

well,
i wuold think that if you are going to pay this amount, wouldn't you want the best. i have money to burn, but not on last years technolgy for the future! If they offer a P4 setup then I would really buy one of these, oh ya, i said i have money to burn!!! well, i am not stupid also. belto... |

First, the P4, as stated above, sucks a LOT more battery bower than the P3-M, and goes to reason that they would equip it with the P3-M. Second, what exactly are you doing that you need THAT MUCH power in a TabletPC, I mean, you aren't gaming, you probably aren't programming, you probably aren't doing 3D-rendering. Maybe some CAD, but you don't need a tremendous amount for that. Other than that, you will be surfing the net, and using Office. Why do you need more power? |

your missing the entire point; why spend money on this when they use old technology with a new one. besides if you spend this amount money you can afford to recharge your tabletpc! it does not really matter what i want the power for, i just want it available. belto... |
