Windows Media 9 Series Release Candidate Available Now | |

Thanks to all of you, beta testing of Windows Media 9 Series has been going extremely well. Feedback from the public newsgroups and listservs has helped us to identify and fix numerous bugs since our last beta release (build 2800) in late September. To help ensure a rock-solid Final release, we made the Release Candidate of the Player, Encoder, and SDK publicly available on the web tonight (Oct 31, 2002) so that you can test these components in your environments. There are a number of new features of note in the Player that are detailed at the bottom of this post. Be sure to read the player and encoder release notes to see what’s new and a list of all known issues and workarounds, and please continue to post your feedback (feature requests and bug reports) to the appropriate beta newsgroup so that we can gather and act on your input | ||

Pretty sure the system restore is your route for uninstalling the finals as well. I can see why they did it but its stupid. They should just make an uninstallable version.
As for downloading the player I had trouble doing it following the link on the headline. If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.asp you can download it straight away. Please have 30 second skip feature.... Peace, RA |

| Windows Media Player 8 can't be uninstalled. No reason why this should be. |

WMP8 can be uninstalled: Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components. I'm not sure this was present before SP1.
But v8 comes with the OS, so that's not a huge issue even if it couldn't be. Multiple betas, OTOH, should certainly be removable from a system in a way that doesn't cause potential damage to other things, which System Restore can. This has prevented a lot of prudent people from even trying the beta on a system they care about. And the final version should allow you to go back to the version that came with the OS. |

If you are using XP, try going to a command prompt and typing
ipconfig /flushdns This should flush your DNS resolver cache, and may let you download the new build. and here's a direct link I just tested (for XP) http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediaplayer/WMPbeta/9/WXP/EN-US/mpsetupXP.exe ----------- Oops, missed the part about you getting the RC from your friend.
