Can a fledgling nonprofit organization with half a dozen employees challenge the largest software company in the world? Mitch Kapor, co-founder of Lotus Development and a pioneer of personal computer software, thinks so. He is heading up a project to build a free, open-source equivalent of Microsoft Outlook, the set of e-mail, calendar and contacts applications that comes with Microsoft's pervasive Office suite. | ||

This article said that he isn't trying to provide an alternative to Outlook with Exchange on the backend, so I'm not really sure what he is trying to accomplish different from any of the countless other mail clients out there, but anyhow....
What confuses me greatly about these open source projects trying to provide a free open source version of Outlook to use with Exchange is that they are stating that their aim is to help avoid the associated licensing costs. Hmmm... but Outlook is free with an Exchange CAL, and you'd have to buy the Exchange CAL anyway.... Where's the savings???? It actually costs more with something like Ximian's Evolution, because you have to pay for the Evolution license PLUS the Exchange CAL. And, you get a less functional client. Wow, what a deal. So it runs on Linux... please show me the overall savings, because I'm not seeing any. |

| I'll be glad when the MISSION of these open-sources goes beyond copying existing functionality. When are we gonna see some innovation? |

I do think it was in poor taste to announce vaporware, however. |
