TOKYO and REDMOND, Wash. -- Oct. 18, 2002 -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) and Microsoft Corp. today unveiled a new technology they have co-developed that enables a dramatically improved method of storing, arranging and playing back personal digital photo, music and video collections on recordable discs such as CD-RW media. Called HighM.A.T. (TM) , which stands for High-performance Media Access Technology, this new technology is designed to significantly improve interoperability for digital media content between PCs and popular electronic devices such as CD players, car stereos and living room DVD devices. CDs created using the HighM.A.T. technology will be fully compatible with existing devices that play back recordable disc media. Panasonic, Microsoft and Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd. (Fujifilm) will adopt this new technology for use in their future products. The HighM.A.T. specification will also be available for easy licensing by other consumer electronics companies and software developers at http://www.HighMAT.com/. | ||

I've been thinking recently about what would be the perfect Digital Video Recording device for _myself_. Others might find it compelling as well:
1. It would be a DV Box (no hard drive) that sits at the living room stereo/video rack. It would connect to the receiver or the output of the satellite dish receiver. It would have an 10/100 Ethernet connection, and would be connected to my home network. It would also have optical/coxial digital out for 5.1 sound output. Others may also want RCA Jacks. It would have RCA and SVHS video output. Component output would be nice, but a goal would be to keep the cost of this DV box under $200. 2. All video storage (mpeg 4, most likely but I have the space for mpeg 2 if necessary) would be to the file server where I would install a hard drive dedicated to video storage. 3. There would be a "Cable Mouse" that runs from the little DV box to an external IR unit that would be the controller for changing channels, etc... 4. All programming would be done on any networked PC, not at the DV Box. A small display on the DV box would show the currently playing program, and allow the selection of a stored program to be played, but that's about it. 5. Paid channel listings would be an OPTION, but not mandatory. The software would have an intuitive interface that allowed manual recording of single shows, series, etc... just like current Tivo's and UTV's. 6. The software would be open-architecture, where owners or other programmers could develop plug-in's for it at will. Now THAT is something I'd buy without even budgeting for it :) TL |

Oh, forgot one thing....
The video could be played back at the master TV/Stereo room on the TV, or it could be played back at any computer on the network. TL |

Hey TL,
Why no hardrive? Would it be fast enough to play back or compress video on the fly? Would it support divx? |

I don't like it when Microsoft messes with standards of this type.
Let companies like Philips, Sony and Panasonic under some industry standard authority (IEEE? ISO? or whatever) come up with the standards. A lot safer. This post was edited by xavalon on Friday, October 18, 2002 at 16:59. |

Safer how? BTW, I heard three companies (Panasonic, Microsoft and Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd.), not just MS. Sony, Philips and Panasonic does not always produce products only if they are under some industry standard authority. And who knows, eventually HighMAT may be ISO . I think it is good when companys from different industries work together to make better consumer devices. |
