Sun-Microsoft: Missed opportunities | |

Microsoft's rejection of Sun Microsystems' Java is nearly complete. Save for the occasional nod towards Java's popularity in enterprise development, Java does not enter into any of the development plans at Microsoft. This is the outcome of a three-and-a-half year legal battle over Microsoft's implementation of Java technology. Sun would have us believe that the successful suit saved the world from Microsoft's corruption of Java's "Write Once, Run Anywhere" (WORA) promise. In truth, all Sun has accomplished is to create a void for a VM-style technology on Windows, creating a market opportunity for the ultimate "polluted" Java (.NET). It would have been better for Sun to have allowed Microsoft to chart its own course with Java and relied on developers to make their own decisions than to chase off the investment and marketing muscle Microsoft could have put into Java. | ||

Finally a look at the true problem with how Sun handled the problem.
I don't disagree that MS did violate the license (though I have never actually seen the license). However, I think that he makes a great business point that would have truely fueled Java in the enterprise. I have tried to use Java on multiple occasions and I do like it. However, the Development Environment that Sun offers is SLOW and cumbersome to use. MS's VJ++ IDE was and still is superior from an ease of use perspective. Sun should have realized that MS was accepting Java and trying to work with it. The changes they made for the most part made it easier to program java both from the IDE and a the programming perspective. I don't doubt that MS would have embraced Java in the long run and Java itself would have penetrated the market MUCH more if Sun would have worked with MS in providing a more open and easier to use language. Instead it is still limping along (yes I said that and I believe it). I have used both JSP and ASP and feel that ASP is much more advanced not to mention ASP.NET. sure its not "cross plateform" unless you get a third party filter for Apache etc. But it is more powerful and faster than JSP. Java as an application programming language is also "ok" but still is SLOW and a pain to produce. Applets is where Java had kept up except now it is loosing ground to Flash since Macromedia has added so much programming support to Flash. Let's hear the debate. |

MS, please create an interface for .NET to allow Java apps in the browser or on the desktop to run on the CLR. This would make me happy as I would never have to install a JVM, and dispite the fact that Sun would complain that it wasn't their JVM, they really would have no room for complaints because the bottom line is that their apps would run.
This could be done without calling it Java, and without having to deal with Sun. Not to mention that any bugs (security issues) in Sun's code would be irrelevant to Windows because you wouldn't be using a VM based on their code. Above all this, the standard JVM interface could still be offered to those that absolutely must have a JVM (Sun or otherwise). A side benefit is that because the code is running through .NET instead of a standard JVM, there should be a significant speed boost, and Java GUI apps potentially could automatically use native widgets. Ximian has even mentioned the possability of running Java seamlessly through .NET. |

Nothing here that wasn't said 4 years ago. It's just nice to see some of the media pundits finally listening to the rational voices.
Mr. Humpty - At lunch we were also talking about how Macromedia Flash has now surpassed Java and actually fulfilled the promises that Java had made. You barely see Java on web sites any more. But I think this was largely due to the lack of solid direction from Sun, and their desire to make Java be all things to all people whereas Flash is focused on a particular subset of operations. |

| blue, I agree with your Flash thoughts. Not only is Flash good for WORA client apps. It also is good for creating smart clients, since it can talk to middle tier app servers. |

| athlon... yes it is possible... using some sort of server side programming. I made one with ASP and Flash 4 I think. |

| I don't see what bandwidth requirements a flash chat client would have that a java one wouldn't have. |
