Microsoft's CEO Steve "I love this company" Ballmer defended its licensing structure and pricing for desktop version of Windows this week at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo conference. When asked if Microsoft is reconsidering its Software Assurance plan, Ballmer outlined the plan's benefits, which include giving customers a right to all upgrades, fixes, patches, and any enhancements Microsoft issues via add-on packs and capabilities as opposed to more frequent full upgrades. He added that customers have the right to any major upgrades that Microsoft issues as well. | ||

In context, this refers to Windows vs. Lindows, not to any possible price increases or Software Assurance.

You bring up a good point. The only group of people who really got screwed by the XP release were the 2K to XP Pro upgraders. $200 is an _awful_ lot of money to pay for bug fixes and cosmetics, as well as the privilage of a new Digial Leash. I don't count the built-in mini-programs for anything because they are generally worthless. TL |

| Nobody was forced to upgrade to any version. It's the consumers choice as to whether or not they want to upgrade. If Microsoft wants to charge $10,000 for an XP upgrade, they should feel free to do so. |

| Hmm, I'd have to say people claiming XP isn't a major improvement over 2k haven't used it. |
