.NET's threat to Java is financial not technological, according to James Gosling who believes Microsoft's wallet poses the biggest challenge to Sun Microsystems Inc's drive for market share, Gavin Clarke writes. Gosling - the inventor of Java - concedes, though, Microsoft has made some inroads with Visual Studio.NET. The integrated development environment (IDE), he believes, could pose more of a threat than the .NET languages it contains. | ||

Gosling's an idiot. Pretty good architect and computer scientist, sure, but he's so lost in Java that he can't pull his head up and see what's going on around him.
He bashes C# at every turn, but fails to realize all the fundamental flaws of Java, let alone Sun's control and marketing of Java. Time is the harshest teacher, and it appears that Gosling is about to get a very hard lesson indeed. |

Well, If I invented something like Java, I would be a zealous defender of it too. It's human nature.
In an ideal world, we would not take a personal stake in our ideas... we would compare and contrast them rationally, and if a better idea is found, we would abandon ours. Alas, scientists (nearly all of them) do take at least SOME personal stake in their ideas. I would say one measure of how good a scientist you are is how easily you let go of your ideas if they appear to have flaws or weaknesses. Gosling is just being defensive. |

I would like to announce that I have an idea about cancer: we could create a substance that cures it. My current implementation is hemlock, which does cure the cancer but has some flaws.
50 years later, when somebody else actually figures out a usable implementation after investing trillions of dollars, I will say that they stole my idea and simply made some minor improvements on implementation. If I had their kind of money to buy research partners, I would have done it. All hail me as the true inventor of a cure for cancer! |
