Windows XP setting crashes dorm networks | |

Dartmouth students experiencing network difficulties over the past few weeks may themselves be causing the problem. According to Computing Services, laptop computers running Windows XP that are connected to the Internet through both the wireless and cable networks are crashing residence cluster connections when a "network bridging" feature is enabled. Bill Brawley, director of user communications at Computing Services, said that the problem begins when a laptop with Windows XP switches between the wireless Internet card and an Ethernet cable connection. "There are two sort of network interfaces then," Brawley said. "The bridge feature is handy on a home network, but on our network it bridges those two devices and sets up a loop in which packets travel between the networks, sort of a feedback loop. This messes up both networks for the whole building." | ||

So, why is this an XP problem? Is a network configuration problem. I hate how people will take any generic problem and blame it on Windows.
Remember that moron that was saying how Windows XP will be the downfall of the Internet because it allows raw packet writing? Nevermind the fact that there are many OSes already out there that allow this, or you can even buy devices that do it. But none of those will be a problem, JUST WINDOWS XP. Sure. Right. |

Anybody read the article on /. about banning Win2k, because of it's security problems? Now they will have to ban XP for the same type of issues...the issue being of course, that the network admins are to lazy to set up proper solutions..like locking down the port (refernce to the net admins saying people were running servers on the network.) I am with both you guys (#1, #2) every little problem equals a windows problem...the stupidity of some net admins amazes me.

| Binhex, you could accomplish the same thing with several other OSes, XP just makes it much easier. Is that what MS is guilty of--making it easier? What do you suggest for a resolution? (I'm not bashing here, but honestly asking your opinion. I do understand what you are saying.) |

I use IP spoofing daily in my work, if it wasn't in XP then I would have to go back to using Win2k or NT4. No, I'm sorry... Steve Gibson is an alarmist who makes himself look pretty silly. As far as this, I'd be very surprised if this is on by default. If it is, then XP should be criticized. But in Win2k you always had to enable this manually. |

Windows XP is not the only OS that you can turn on bridging. In fact, I think there's a way to do it in NT 4 and Win2K. Not to mention most other OSes including the Holy Linux itself. This isn't an XP issue, this is a network configuration issue. |
