Home users and network professionals who are worried about security should pay attention. The SANS Institute and the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center have released their annual top 20 list of vulnerabilities, a cheat sheet for recognizing the most dangerous threats. Find out what those threats are tonight on "Tech Live." The list is split into two top 10 lists, one for Windows holes and the other for Unix/Linux holes. It's meant to help less-experienced system administrators and managers of small networks prioritize their fixes. | ||

Hmm, the link in the TechTV article is bad... it says 'annual top 20', but it links to #W4 so it ends up down the list at vulnerability #4 instead of the index. Very odd.
SANS is a pretty good group, and has taken a very non-OS centric attitude towards things. When I was at the SANS conference in 2001 Northcutt did joke about Windows a little bit, but he also stated that since it was everywhere the best way that we could serve would be to understand it and learn how to secure it. They also had some incredibly knowledgeable instructors. Anyway, pay attention to the top-20 list, it's all good advice. Also check out the SANS reading room at http://rr.sans.org. Also if you have the time, go through the GIAC certification process... it's pretty intense and you learn quite a bit. |

#5, MS generally does not publicly release patches for unreleased products. On the other hand, there are many different classes of people besides "public" who are running pre-release .NET Server. Those who are participants in the JDP and technical beta usually get the latest builds which incorporate security patches. If you got your RC1 from the CPP or MSDN or TechNet, then you are actually just a "marketing beta" participant, which is the same thing as "public." At best, the only thing you'll get is RC2.
The unpatched security vulnerabilities in RC1 are extremely minor in terms of real-world exposure, and you really shouldn't be putting anything on a beta/test server which is worth stealing or worth protecting. |
