Microsoft Reports Progress in Averting Computer Crashes | |

Microsoft today released data about its Watson online error-reporting service, which the company says has had a significant impact on increasing the stability of its software. The company has struggled in recent years to improve its credibility in the face of an industry reputation for error-prone programs. Microsoft said that the quality of its software had improved as a result of the work of programmers in its Office group who produced the Watson system, which reports and then transmits to Microsoft real-world data about customer crashes. | ||

Hey gt dont spread misinformation. Please tell me what confidential data is sent to microsoft. Id really like to have some facts. Not to mention that the error reporting is voluntary, you can always disable it.

| I assume he means that when you send the error data to Micorosft, you are sending the application's memory dump. Since that application's memory space naturally contains not only program memory, but also user memory for the documents you are working on, you also send potentially confidential information from that document memory space. |

If I remember correctly, on XP... the first time it crashed and asked to send info about the crash... it thoroughly explained the potential for sending personal information. I EXPLICITLY stated that was ok, and my crash data uploads began.
BTW... I've had all of a dozen such uploads in my 5 months of XP use. Not bad at all! |
