Gentoo, Lindows and Lycoris arguably were the big surprises of the year in the Linux land, but everyone is waiting the release of Red Hat 8.0 with, possibly, the biggest anticipation ever for a Linux distribution. Since Red Hat posted the Limbo and Null betas, fans of the most popular distribution on earth were making waves and even called this new version a Windows killer. Does this really hold up though? I liked the conclusion:
It isn't ready yet, it has a number of rough edges, and I really do not understand where the whole fuss was about the last two months about Red Hat 8 being a Windows killer on the desktop. It isn't one. Not yet anyway. |

| Not trying to be inflamatory, eastbam, but what is the goal of Linux at present? I understood that they are trying to move onto the desktops of the world replacing Windows with themselves. If they want to replace Windows, which has plenty of "silly GUI app[s]", then they better get good looking GUI apps too. Most Windows users I know can barely open files by double clicking. Learning SSH would be a bit too much for them. |

Now I remember why I don't read slashdot.
" You can tell redhat sucks cuase it's easy to install. That's why i use gentoo. It's so eleet it doens't even have an installer! you just copy the stuff over by hand! that just proves you have to be eleet to use it! my mom got mad when i installed it on our dell in the family room but it's just cuase she's not leet! you posers in the data centers running redhat on the huge server farms are pussies compared to my leet mp3 server! uh my mom needs to get a recipe off marthastweart.com, gotta go!" |

beeyp, there are some jokes that I dont find funny. It seems every time I read slashdot, I read jokes that are supposed to be funny but aren't to me. Seeing this reminded me yet again, why I seldom read slashdot. |

eastbam - Your desktop seems to be covered with pretty useless icons and colors. My WinXP desktop is less cluttered than that crap. What are those things on the bottom? 64x64 bit icons?
When you grow up you'll learn that a good UI means far more than just having pretty colored icons. This is an unfortunate trend with Linux developers. They look at Windows and the MacOS and all they see is pretty icons and colors. They don't realize that that aspect is just for presentation purposes, that the real quality of the UI is much more subtle. (Well ok, maybe not for Mac OSX) Then they try to design a UI for Linux, they copy the pretty colors and icons. But because they want to make their UI "better", they make the colors and icons incredibly overstated such that they really stand out.(like eastbam's screenshots show) This post was edited by sodablue on Monday, September 30, 2002 at 10:52. |

I suggest you cut out the unsulting comments if you want anybody to even being to take you seriously. That said... There is NOTHING that you can do an a CLI that can not be done in a GUI, and usually it's much more quickly in a GUI, especially if you are doing a command that you don't use much. Also, why do you think the computing industry switched to windowing systems.... because it's MORE productive than a CLI. |

CPUGuy - Actually I'm a CLI bigot. :) I think the CLI is more efficient than GUI on many occasions. But I use both, depending on what seems the easiest way. That's one of the things I do like about Windows is how easy it is to go back and forth. I can do a 'start .' to pull up the directory in a window, or a right-click 'command prompt here' to bring up a CLI off a explorer window...
RichardJC - Actually biggest problem I've seen with Gnome, KDE, Linux in general are small niggly quirks. Mouse doesn't respond correctly, buttons seem to have weird hot points. These are items that are difficult to describe, but subconcsciously they are bloody annoying. "lets see, now where did the "reveal desktop" button first come from?" - Not sure, I've been doing Windows-M for years. I can't imagine it coming from any other OS as it was really the poor design of Windows that resulted in it being needed.(i.e. putting icons all over the desktop) "How long before Windows gets virtual desktops I wonder." - Been there since Windows 3.1 at least, but dependent on video card drivers. Under XP it's in the powertoys collection. "but why bother when Linux can run multiple user contexts on the same desktop at the same time. I think thats an upcoming feature in Windows, or is it already there?" - Well, uhh, because the point is just to switch Sam to the background so Joe can logon and use it. It's mainly for families. As far as multiple user contexts on the same desktop, Win2k introduced the runas ability and it's even easier within WinXP.(runas is su) "I'm not sure Windows Terminal Services yet supports things like seamless cut and paste between apps running on different "servers" ("clients" in X speak)." - It works for me using the XP remote desktop client. "I explained X's networking abilities to some terminal services users and they were quite amazed. " - X's networking abilities creates it's own share of problems, security being the major one. read more if you want... http://www.eax.com/umlug/display/ "the ELF binary format" - ELF came from SVR4. "the CODA network filesystem (and support for other network cacheing filesystems)." - CODA came from the Andrews File System which I was using back in '92. If they've made it reliable, then that's a true innovation! :) "Debian's package management system was (back in 94 whenever), and still is, far ahead of anything else I've seen." - Honestly I don't see much innovative here, it mostly addressed problems that are unique to Linux in a brute force method rather than solving the actual issue. What MS did with WinInstall, and especially the ability to advertise packages to users is far more useful in the Windows environment. "There are so many places where Windows is catching up with Linux." - Ahh such comments remind me of the time someone claimed Windows 3.1 copied it's look and feel from Motif.
