While Silicon Valley stutters, far to the north in Redmond, Washington, near Seattle, Microsoft has its foot firmly on the pedal of research and development. In July, the world's largest software company, which is almost universally detested among its northern Californian rivals, announced it would raise its annual R&D budget by 20 per cent, to $5.2bn. | ||

FYI, JWM when a company wants to enter a new market, they buy into it. It is naive and best and stupid at worst to say that Microsoft "[has] never shown any real innovation".

Right BobSmith, buying into a market is a completely legitimate method. I don't suppose anyone remembers all those little $5-50M purchases that Apple made. Oh, but those don't count... because we all know Apple is the most innovative shitehole on the face of the earth.
JWM... " am talking about a new market that they don't buy their way into." JWM, are you aware that Home Depot just bought 4 flooring store companies... trying to ENTER THE MARKET for flooring stores. Damn them! And GE bought NBC a few years ago to ENTER THE MARKET for broadcast television. Damn them! And Electronic Arts bought Westwood Studios to ENTER THE MARKET for space simulators. Damn them! And IBM just bought PwC to ENTER THE MARKET for blah blah blah... and 10,000 more examples. JWM - do you get the message? Its a business tactic used EVERY day by EVERY company. |
