This computer could turn out to be a very big deal. Not so much because it’s the first under-$200 new PC to hit the marketplace or because it runs a version of Linux which can run some Windows programs — but because the idea had been embraced by the number one online service. LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING. Wal-Mart.com is now selling a computer made by Microtel which retails for $199.86. As you might expect, the computer is on the bare-bones side. Microtel also uses a new, free version of the Linux OS instead of Microsoft Windows to save money. That’s where the story gets interesting. | ||

Let the aolers have this crappy lindows. Im so sick of cheap asses home building pc's at the lowest cost with incompatible hardware, then wondering why the pc blue screens every minute. Let the cheap people get this crap so they can blame lindows instead of microsoft for a change.

A note to the ActiveNetwork admins:
Might I recommend an update to the comment system in the future that has some sort of recovery built in for a comment you wrote? I just finished up about 20 minutes of writing a long, detailed response, clicked "Post" and got an ASP error. At that point, I clicked back and was told the page had expired. Lovely. Just lost all that input. It'd be nice to see ways around this in the future... till then, I'm done commenting. I'm not going to take the time to copy and paste all my comments into Notepad in the fear that I might lose what I just wrote. :) It really is a pain in the ass as it is the 3rd time that's happened to me in the past year due to whatever circumstance makes it occur. | Why would anyone buy this when (as the author mentions) they can get the same PC with modem included and running Windows for $100 more than the Lindows PC with no modem? |

But #8, these are being sold as computers, not internet appliances.
My point was that the article mentioned that this computer configured with Lindows sells for $199 without a modem. Add a modem and the price becomes $229 The article also mentioned that this exact same computer configured with Windows (not Lindows) is only $70 more. If the average consumer is already familiar with Windows, but knows nothing about Lindows, why wouldn't they pay just $70 more for the OS they are already familliar with and know it will run all of their applications without any compatability or performance problems. It just doesn't make much sense to bother with the hassel of using Lindows in this situation. Lindows' subscription service also hinders it as a cheap alternative to MS. With what you pay in subscription fees, you might as well stick with MS. If you just want to be cheap, download or buy a regular Linux distro. That's cheaper than using Lindows. |

I get the impression that people who hype up Unix haven't been using it for very long. 10-15 years ago it was considered a toy OS. When I first started using it 10 years ago it was cool, but it was still pretty rickety.

Well at least you understood that point. "And when you absolutely need mission critical, rock solid service, the big companies go Unix. There's no debating here if you've ever worked with Fortune 500 companies and this has nothing to due which what OS's I prefer, its just a fact." And interestingly, they also use Windows NT for the same purposes. That isn't really up for debate either, it's just a fact. sphbecker - Actually the only place Unix is really better as a server is in places like databases where you really need the I/O and memory space that the RISC architecture offers. For webservers, file/print, email and so forth the NT solutions are much nicer, easier to manage, etc. That's largely why I question Linux, as you don't get the real benefits that the commercial Unix offers, so what's the point?
