Microsoft Tries to Balance Security, Innovation
Time: 04:11 EST/09:11 GMT | News Source: PC World | Posted By: Alex Harris

Projects with code names such as Sapphire and Sideshow may not conjure up visions of futuristic technology, but they promise to deliver advancements in how computers process and secure information, the head of Microsoft's research division said during a visit to San Francisco last week. Armed with a long history in software development, engineers at Microsoft Research are working to invent new ways to secure PCs and digital content and create new applications that make computers easier to interact with, its senior vice president of research, Rick Rashid, said in an interview.

Somewhat removed from the divisions at Microsoft that produce revenue-generating products, Microsoft Research is where company engineers experiment with new techniques in software and application development. Although some of its work admittedly goes unused, Rashid says, a variety of projects do find their way into company products such as the Office application suite and Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system. For example, Web services security standards now being integrated into Microsoft's.Net products are the result of lab projects, he said. So are elements of the digital rights management technology to be included in a future server product from Microsoft.

Hi Bob, how come that lately we are infested by trolls? #2 Do you know what the Sideshow or Sapphire are? Btw have you checked your grammar lately?

beeyp - Slashdot isn't a pro-Linux site. It's a geek news site.

It just happens that a lot of Linux zealots troll there. :(

athlon, he's just the local idiot who thinks he knows something, when in fact, he knows very little... it's people like him who give Mac users a bad name (ie, that Mac users are stupid).

beeyp - Go over to slashdot and complain about it being a pro-Linux site. I guarantee the only response you'll get is that it is a site for geeks.

And how would you know what CmdrTaco and CowboyNeal like? They hardly deal with the site anymore, they are too busy playing Counterstrike on Win98.

Where do I go to suggest an IGNORE feature on these boards? I realize that IGNORING a few individuals won't help much, but the reality is that too many otherwise quality posters are "taking the bait".

#12 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 7:38:01 PM
TOS, TOS, TOS! Reading this site lately is like watching an edited Eddy Murphy movie.

BobStein, haven't you heard? "LOL" is sooooo out of date. ; - ) I believe a little troll told me that a few threads ago. Lol!

#13 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 7:41:29 PM
Mooresa56, I've suggested that feature more than 10 times. If you ignored nom, who doesn't say anything useful and is a self proclaimed troll, beeyp, who also says nothing useful and whose posts are removed 25% of the time, SJerk, SMac, SLinux then you'd have a mostly respectable site again. Oh, Zver would probably be a good guy to kill too, though his posts have all been removed, so it doesn't much matter. Lol!

Well, in the future at least there will be a profanity filter... :-)

Well folks.
Maybe for the first time you are going to find me agreeing with Nom on something.
Has H3ll frozen over yet.

From an architecture Standpoint.

The Power PC is far far superior to the x86 platform, (even though the x86 platform is really a hardware translation of the old machine language into a Risc based processor but that is another debate)

But there is such a low volume of production on the Power devices, that they are not clocked up as quickly 1.
Are much much harder to scale 2.

I won't go into the details of it. one I only know the basics about the architecture, well enough to understand the scalability issues. Other risc companies had the same issues.
DEC, HP, even IBM with its version of the Power PC has scaling issues.
I worked at Both plants that produced Athlon chips and the G4 chips.

On the issue of architecutre there is so much involved. G4 handles some graphics features much much better than the P4 or athlon chips do. that is proven. and is the type of programs that Apple uses in its specs to "preve" that it is a better machine.

The issue is, even with that optimization in the chip. Graphics Coprocessors are moveing ahead hundreds of times faster and it would be better for Apple if they used that power instead of relying on a CPU that is only marginly moving ahead in scalability.

ATI and Nvidia are both putting out GPU's that can do the work of a Cluster farm in rendoring and in real time this year. That is how much of a difference there is in A specialize chip and a CPU when it comes to graphics componets.

And it is only going to get better in that regard.

On pure Number crunching. While the G4 can match a p4 or a athlon running 800 mhz(in the case of the p4 or 300 mhz in the case of the athlon architecture) The point is that these
have moved on so much further.
Even the G4 at 1.2 gigs is already behind in what is offered by intel and AMD
The benifits on the CPU for graphics processing mean little when the GPU can do a much better job of handleing it.
Unless you are Apple and rely on that CPU to do more work:)
