Imagine having a PC that allows you to listen to music. And view your photos. And even record your favorite television programs. What? You can do all of that stuff right now? Oh yeah, that's right, you can. Which is part of the problem with Windows XP Media Center Edition, the latest enhancement to Microsoft's flagship OS. While Media Center adds some nifty user-interface enhancements, it doesn't enable you to do much that's truly new. In fact, the only significant addition--the ability to use your PC as a TiVo-like personal video recorder (PVR)--has long been available for Windows XP through third-party apps like SnapStream's Personal Video Station (ironically, SnapStream's one of Microsoft's Windows XP Launch Partners). | ||

No chance of it selling like XP did - but then again I doubt that is their aim. It looks nice though.

I was really enthused with this. I was all about it. However, I will not be purchasing it for two reasons.
1) You have to buy a brand new pc. 2) The copy protection they put on it. My setup is currently a dell small form factor (dimension 4500s) that is setup next to my tv. All it does is serve as an alarm clock and PVR. I use snapstream as my PVR right now. I would love to be able utilize media center as frankly its interface is the best out there bar none. But I eventually copy the shows back to my main pc to watch or actually stream it from the network. My ideal setup: Windows Freestyle Addon pack (I would pay up to 100-150 bucks for software + hardware required - copy protection crap). Tablet PC which served as a remote control for my freestyle pc playing on tv via remote desktop. Even better add Mira but have the TV mirror whats on the computer display! I cant do this yet because currently remote desktop is headless. What I want to happen is for what I am doing through remote desktop/terminal services to actually be played on the pc the actual programs are running on utilizing its video card and sound card. Remote desktop/Terminal Services currently doesn't work this way. And then they don't make an addon pack for Windows Freestyle aka Media Center. I am going to start emailing Microsoft every week asking for these things to be added. If enough people ask for it they will do it. So go to mswish and make it happen. the point that this author is missing and so are alot of other people is, yes all these things are possible today but microsoft is wanting to dumify the eXPerience for the average consumer. Most people like my mom or grandpa don't know how to figure out half the stuff that us geeks tend to take for granted as basic knowledge. Plus the fact that it leads down another path of pc/tv integration which M$ has been trying to do for the last few years in one form or another(WebTV, UltimateTV, MSN TV, TV Photo Viewer, Xbox..etc.) This post was edited by Tegument on Friday, September 06, 2002 at 08:35. |

| JeffChapnet, its a lot easier to be "before their time" when they control both the software and the hardware with a HEAVY (the heaviest) hand. |

| Kennedy, the XBOX so far has done about exactly as well as expected. I don't know what you were expecting. With XBOX Live shortly to become reality and lots of news about XBOX 2, I'd say the XBOX will keep climbing up Sony's mountain of market share. |

| #10, I'm not sure I understand your post...and as far as the other peeps comments on pc/tv integration..., yes some of these products have not faired so well, but convergence of the 2 products will eventually happen whether we like it or not..it just hasnt been done correctly yet too this point for the masses to except it, but the integration of the 2 is such an obvious evolutionary path that you'd really have to be close minded not to see it eventually happening. |
