Is Linux poised to topple Microsoft? | |

During the Cold War, the initials ABM used to mean Anti-Ballistic Missile. In the late '90s, they stood for Anybody But Microsoft, a reaction to the fact that Bill Gates' Windows operating system was in 90 percent of the world's computers and critics didn't like the restrictions Microsoft Corp. placed on computer companies that licensed its software. But now Microsoft is a convicted monopolist, forced to ease up on those restrictions. The biggest beneficiaries of the New Millennium ABM Club may be proponents of Linux, the open-source operating system, long considered to be as potentially disruptive to Microsoft's dominance as a missile strike on Communist-era Moscow. | ||

| What kind of stuff people smoke at CNN? Or maybe they are distracted by, cough cough, the performance of AOL stock? "Open Source essentially means no secrets"?!?!?! To me "Open source" is synonymous of a faulty business model, lack of profits and consequentially unemployment. It seems that lately everybody is busy painting wors and wors "Doomsday" forecasts for MS but in spite of "analysis MS is increasing investments in R&D and hiring more people. |

It seems to me that this supposed "Year of the Penguin" has been claimed to have occurred nearly every year since 98 or so. I'd like to see a listing of Linux vendors who are profitable. I might believe that Linux has a chance if I saw that.
When I see Dell, who two years ago sold Linux servers, cancelling a Linux product line, it makes me think the penguin is drowning - not flying. |

Yeah, Mr. Dee, I hear IBM, HP, Borland, Red Hat, et al. all filed to become non-profit organizations and even went the extra step of ending all salaries, and now they give away their products too. Sun has been doing really well on that losing money strategy. RedHat has an excellent 7 year track record of losses.
Bluesky, isn't that Dell cluster a special case? I understood that it was an extremely custom system for one customer and not a new addition to their product line. How did Linux come to be represented by penguin? They should have chosen something like a puppy. People like cute and cuddly. Who would think of cute and cuddly when seeing a penguin? |

Well, Bob, I've used Sun as an example (because they do support some OS), but they aren't the best example. What OS initiative are they losing money on? In fact, I think most people would advocate they do more to jump into the Linux/OS game.
RedHat: Astronomical Revenue growth for the last seven years with every analyst in the industry predicting profitability by next year. Very Bad Example. Boy, you're just weird. The penguin is much beloved. Why would someone take your opinion as the best one, when you don't like OS, kiss MS's ass, and suggest things like IBM should have followed Unisys's lead? |
