Windows XP Media Center Edition Released to Manufacturing In Time for Holiday 2002 | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced the release of Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition, the newest member of the Windows XP family, to computer manufacturers in the United States and Canada. It is expected to ship to Korea in the next few weeks. With development of the software now complete, computer manufacturers working with Microsoft, including Hewlett-Packard Co. (offering distribution in North America) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Korea), will have the ability to ship the first wave of new media center PCs in time for the holiday shopping season. These new media center PCs, powered by the Intel Pentium 4 processor, will provide the performance needed to get the best-in-class digital entertainment experience. Computer manufacturers and hardware and software vendors endorse media center PCs as a critical advancement that will provide not only an exciting consumer experience but also new opportunities for continued innovation as the PC evolves to become a more indispensable consumer entertainment device. | ||

Anyone know if HP will be the only company who will be selling Media Center in the US?
Also, does Media Center also have all the features of XP pro? Thanks!!! |

#2: I believe that HP will initially be the only maker of Media Center PCs, but I'm sure that other PC Makers will join the club eventually (probably not in time for Holiday 2002 :P).
Yes, Media Center is basically XP Pro SP1 with the Media Center software installed. |

What about the copy protection enforced in these systems? I read conflicting reports about how it is implemented and I believe this could be a serious issue. Just to clear the point I am not in favor of piracy but I believe I have the right to make compilations of CDs I bought and play them on my MP3 device or in my PC, car CD driver etc.
Any device that would deny it will not get in my buying list. |

I am very interested in "Media Center', especially considering the future developments of the concept with the possibility of interaction with other equipments in other rooms etc. so I hope they will keep a balanced approach as far as DMR is concern. |
