Microsoft 'patches' tear at computer users' good will | |

Microsoft Corp. has found yet another security hole in its software, which runs more than 90 percent of the world's computers. By itself, the latest flaw isn't much better or worse than the other 47 security problems Microsoft has disclosed this year. Hackers could potentially exploit the newly discovered flaw to misdirect Internet shoppers and trick them into divulging sensitive information such as credit card numbers or bank accounts, but doing so wouldn't be easy. The bigger problem for most computer users is the sheer number of flaws coming from Microsoft. Each time one is found, Microsoft issues a software "patch" that it recommends be downloaded and installed. Last year, Microsoft issued 60 patches. On occasion, it has had to issue patches for the patches themselves. | ||

#1 no one is forcing you to install the patches. If you want to wait till a Service Pack for a particular application comes out, then you can. But I think that coming out with patches as soon as they are found is good also for people who want their systems patched and uptodate as soon as possible. For some people, waiting a year till their systems are patched is not acceptable.
At the end of the day, Microsoft already issue patches as soon as they can and do Service Packs also so we all have the best of both worlds. There's nothing wrong with people highlighting flaws in software products, after all, best to get them fixed rather than ignore them. But of course people moaning about them like it needs to be fixed before armageddon are really sad. |

| #4 What are you getting at? I shop online for everything. I also pay all my bills - telephone, cell phone, mortage, utilities, etc. I use the latest version of IE exclusively. Are you saying I'm unwise for doing this? Perhaps there is another browser or operating system that doesn't have security flaws that you'd recommend? With flaws recently discovered in OpenSSL and other flaws in IE, the safest way to conduct eCommerce would be to not conduct it. My point here is that both Unix/Linux and Windows systems have security issues. I dare to defend Windows and I put my money where my mouth is. If you don't defend Windows, what do you support? |

I found out last year that my mailbox has a security hole!
If I pay my bills by check, it is possible for someone to steal the letters out of my mailbox and then they have access to my checking account number and my signature! Then to make matters worse, someone could stick anything in my mailbox, like a pipe bomb or anthrax laced letter. And the Post Office does nothing about this! They have not released any patches! |
