Last week we told you how to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 without having to agree to Microsoft's all-new 'we can steal your stuff but we're not going to, honest' supplementary licence. We accepted at the time, of course, that the exercise was essentially frivolous, in that you'd probably be in breach of your licence agreement anyway if you circumvented the new Ts & Cs, and because just circumventing it wouldn't do anything to block the activities you objected to. But hey, you could feel good about yourself, even if nobody else knew and you had no proof that you'd actually stood up and been counted (by yourself) for not checking that 'agree.' Naturally, we've had some queries from the more rational section of the readership who don't particularly care what they agree to, but do care about being snooped on and/or having some maniac updating their machine without so much as a by your leave. | ||

Soda... what kind of stupid are they? ;)
Seriously, I don't see the t&c as being a big deal. You can still turn off the updating feature. So what's the harm? |

| The sad part is that you can tell it to just notify you or download the updates and you install them or have it done automatically. Or you can just hit the check box and turn it off. I just turn it off and then get the e-mail from MS about critical updates, then go to windows update and get them. If I need them quickly I click on the link in the e-mail and download them directly. I can't see what the big deal is. |

| Better yet, if you've got a network, set up your own server with Software Update Services. Your SUS server downloads updates from Microsoft, you choose which patches to approve, you set a group policy, and your clients download them only from your SUS server. Your clients need never connect to Microsoft or the Internet at all, but you still get the benefit of Automatic Updates. |
