Microsoft Settles with Company to Use Xbox Name | |

It's settled: Microsoft won't be forced to turn the Xbox into a Ybox. The software giant on Friday reached an agreement with XBOX Technologies, a small technology holding company that will -- in exchange for an undisclosed reward -- alter its name and drop a challenge to Microsoft's use of the name ``Xbox'' for its upcoming video game console. Details of the deal will be kept under wraps, according to the companies. ``It was a very, very mutually satisfying agreement,'' said Robert Koolen, vice president of marketing for Knowledge Mechanics, a computer-based education company that is the main holding of XBOX Technologies. | ||

First of all, as #3 pointed out, XBOX technologies was in an entirely different market... Microsoft just wanted the name. They didn't buy the company, they bought the rights to the trademark.
Secondly, I can't believe that people are thinking that MS bullied this company into forking over the rights to the "XBox" name. Are you saying that if Microsoft called you up and said "hey, we want to buy the rights to your trademark from you. How much you want?" you'd resist? (The former) XBOX technologies just walked away from this thing a SMILING mo-fo. Good for them, and good for MS. |
