DESPITE PUBLIC STATEMENTS of goodwill, Microsoft's attempt to unbundle its middleware products from Windows has received a resounding gong from developers and IT executives who accuse the company of continuing to stifle competition. The company announced this week it will post nearly 300 new APIs to the Microsoft Developer Network on Aug. 28 as part of a plan to adopt some of the remedies proposed by the long-running antitrust settlement. Also touted is the September release of a Service Pack for Windows XP that's designed to let system manufacturers and users select or remove middleware offerings such as Internet Explorer (IE) browser, Media Player, Outlook Express, Microsoft Messenger, and Microsoft Java Virtual Machine | ||

| I am waiting to see these "developers and IT executives" requesting MS to write programs for them! The point is that no matter what MS disclose these people will ask for more. Time to the turn page here and begin to help succesfull companies not trying to cripple them. |

Here is the statement of the day!
"The best remedy is for Microsoft to offer a version of Windows without Internet Explorer at a lower price, Tetzchner said. "Microsoft says they will let you hide Explorer, but that won't change anything. Users will still have to pay for it in Windows, and even if they hide it, the code still takes up disk space," he said." 1. How does this relate to the release of API documentation? 2. Since IE uses "middleware code", the actual IE is just a wrapper and does not take up much space. as #1 pointed out it doesn't matter what MS does it's never good enough. *granted in the past they haven't been very open but this is a good step in the right direction |

Bhwhawhaa.... disk space? I suspect all of IE couldn't take up much more than 15MB of disk space.
Considering the average machine comes with a 40GB HD these days, that's about: 0.0037% of the user's disk space. Bastards! That's 3 illegal mp3's I can't fit on my HD! This guy doesn't seem to realize that most users wouldn't pay 5 bucks for a copy of Windows without IE... not because it doesn't have IE, but because A MASSIVE PERCENTAGE OF ALL WINDOWS APPLICATIONS WOULD BREAK. Sigh... I say Microsoft gives them this version of Windows, but re-brands it so that it's something like "Dell-OS", or whoever is requesting this modifacation. That way, when users see that nothing works, they will blame the idiots who wanted it in the first place, and not Microsoft. |
