Any illusion that your corner of the Internet is a private place where your data is secure and your e-mail is read only by the people to whom you send it can be shattered by a single click on the Privacy.Net Web site. Within seconds, you will see your IP address, your computer host name and the link from which you arrived at the site. If you are interested, another click presents you with a more thorough analysis of who you are and where on the Web you come from. The page divulges how your domain is configured, your browser type and operating system, whether JavaScript is enabled, which plug-ins are installed, and even the width, height and color depth of your computer's monitor. If a single Web site can see all that, just because a person lands on that particular piece of cyber property, how hard is it, then, for a determined hacker to read your e-mail? | ||

| Come one, a lot of this information about the Referer (where you can from), your IP, and other browser and OS information has been available for years, why are you trying to scare us, nothing else newsworthy to write about??? |

I loved Symantec "For your eyes only". I liked the way it encrypted the files you wanted to encrypt wherever they were, no need for a special container. Now I use Jetico, quite good but not the same stuff. This post was edited by Fritzly on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 at 08:33. |

| I think the reason that encrypted email hasn't taken off is just because it's a major pain in the ass. Plus 99.999% of all email users have absolutely NOTHING worth encrypting--grandma's cookie recipe...ooh, gotta encrypt that. |

I have a personal key for my Outlook at home that I received for free through Verisign(I believe?), and I've used it in the past to communicate with a few friends using encrypted email. It's trivial to configure. Outlook/Exchange/Certificate Server makes it incredibly trivial to do this in a domain environment.

| I really believe this is a non issue. What I email my friends and colleagues is of no import to anyone except the intended receipients. Also, anyone that sends vital information through a public email server is only asking for problems. That is why we have FAX machines, and private mail servers, etc... |

Have to agree that there is little need for the vast majority of email to me encrypted. Sure us pgp and other encryption products in the course of daily business.. but for my most users 95% of there email is just harmless crap that would be of no real use to anyone anyway. Certainly encryption is needed occationally, but for the masses ... I dont think so.
