How Your Peers Are Responding To MS Licensing Terms | |

Microsoft Corp.'s long awaited, controversial new enterprise software licensing terms take effect next week. Over the last couple weeks, we've gauged the plans of our readers with respect to the plans through an online poll. Generally speaking, the results are somewhat more favorable to Microsoft, with a higher percentage of companies getting on board than there were three months ago when we fielded a similar reader poll. Still, the highest percentage of enterprises are still reporting a fairly strong level of resistance to the new plans, which Microsoft recently said were helping boost its revenue in this difficult IT spending climate.

| I am not positive on this, but our company IT Director said that the licensing only effects Server OS's not the XP Pro OS. Well at least for our company. We still will be able to purchase upgrade licenses for XP Pro for around $150 but if we want to upgrade an NT server to 2K or .NET we have to pay full price. |

I have a feeling that this survey doesn't take into account major corporate buyers. Most CIOs and CTOs don't take online polls at techweb. :)
Also as far as MS is concerned, landing a big company with 40,000 desktops is more important than 200 companies with 20 desktops. |

| #6, and my company is waiting until next year to upgrade to AD. So big companies really don't care that much. We have over 22,000 PC's and over 500 servers. Now 95% of those servers have NT 4.0 on them. And we have over 50 Domains that are all NT based. But they will all be merged into one AD Domain. But still that is an AD Domain controller at each of our 50-60 locations plus multiple at our bigger sites. Not to mention the upgrade of most of the servers to 2K. And 22,000 client licenses. |

and as I understand it, the ENTERPRISE licensing plan is already an annual payment plan.
For those that care, we have about 250 desktops and 50 servers. We've been buying software assurance, as needed, for 6 months already. That's the only reason the final check was so low. :-) |
