Sun to push StarOffice for Apple's OS X | |

Apple Computer and Sun Microsystems are cooperating on a version of Sun's StarOffice productivity software for Mac OS X, the companies said. Sun has been looking for hardware allies in its long-running quest to popularize StarOffice, which competes against Microsoft Office. To date, no major PC makers have pledged to heavily promote StarOffice. Apple also gains a friend to help counter its increasingly contentious relationship with Microsoft, which has been struggling with sales of its Office v. X suite for Macintosh. Microsoft expected to sell 750,000 copies of the software; since its release last November, only 300,000 copies of Mac Office have sold. The partnership is expected to produce a Java-based version of OpenOffice by the end of the year, followed by a commercial StarOffice release sometime in 2003. | ||

| I use Mac OS X and Office X everyday and I love them both. I downloaded the beta version of OpenOffice and it was ugly as hell. I want my apps to look nice and be simple to use. Office for the Mac is a great set of applications. My only complaint (and this goes for the Windows version as well) is that it is WAY overpriced. I would not switch unless it allowed me to do things I can't in Office...and do the things I can do now faster and easier. |

Hmmm, "increasingly contentious relationship with Microsoft"? Several years ago, Apple and MS needed to sign an agreement for MS to continue producing software for the Mac, and lately they've said there's no need for a renewal of that agreement, that things are going better than at the time the agreement was signed. The relationship has generally gotten better over the past few years, and then this mention of the poor sales of Office for OS X makes for an increasingly contentious relationship? Doesn't "increasingly" imply a sustained, clear progression, rather than isolated incidents here and there?
Anyhow, Apple may be wise to contribute to having another solid office package in the works in case MS drops Office for Mac in the future (rather distant future, since they are still committed to another release). But at the same time, this contribution may be sealing that fate, and with it the ease of file collaboration between PCs and Macs. File conversion is never seamless. |
