Gates: Slow going for .Net | |

Microsoft on Wednesday acknowledged that its .Net plan has been slow to catch on and laid out an agenda to move the software strategy ahead. Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect, Bill Gates, said, "in some respects we are further ahead, and in some respects (we have) not (moved) as fast (as we hoped)" with .Net, which the company introduced two years ago. Gates made his remarks during a daylong conference at Microsoft's headquarters here as the company presented its plans for the .Net architecture. | ||

The article is about the other pieces of .Net... Hailstorm, .NET Server, etc. Not the platform.
I hate Microsoft for confusing everybody by calling everything .Net. Grrrr. Oh, I guess I find building stuff under VS.NET to be easier than under VS6. Ok, maybe not the ASP.NET stuff, that still bugs me, but... |

soda, when can we drop the whole--that's not .Net, this is .Net thing. You even recognize that it's ridiculous that MS slapped it on to everything. Even though this is a weak article, this was Gates' speech about the status of .Net--he picked his own criteria for grading himself (who can beat that) so who can disagree that he is or is not discussing .Net. This argument doesn't work because MS put themselves in this boat--they called EVERYTHING .Net. And this is what Gates felt was important to talk about--not your individual definition of .Net.
In fact, the criteria are pretty ridiculous... check out: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,396839,00.asp How 'bout judging: cross-platform compatibility ease of migration sites' adoption/creation of web services These criteria seem just as important as 'building a transformative user experience' which as I imagine it has more to do with graphic capabilities than internet services. Until, MS backs off of calling everything .Net 2 years in advance, are they going to keep giving themselves a C? Are they going to come up with real and insightful naming schemes? |

Yeah, definitely SunONE... but if you remember, Sun was really the first to push dot-anything... what was the tag: We Put the Dot Com in Business
...back when everything was dot com, but at least they kept it to an ad cmpaign. And some of them were cool at that... remember the Jaws parody with the great big ball rising up out of the water. |

I hated those commercials. Always people running away from large spheres. :-)
I don't think I saw the Jaws one though (probably did but don't remember). I always thought part of Sun's problem was that they seemingly spent more time producing those cinematic-styled commercials than they did developing software. I thought they should have gone into the movie business since they took it so seriously (could help their stock price). This post was edited by n4cer on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at 22:46. |

| oh yeah, I agree, enforcer, I didn't like the TV commercials. I was talking about the print ads: they were all parodies of classic films... unfortunately I'm getting old and can only remember the Jaws one. |
