Microsoft set to cash in on Office XP | |

Microsoft is hoping that its star player is still a box office favorite. While Microsoft's upcoming Windows XP operating system and Xbox game console may grab the headlines, nothing beats the company's Office applications for sheer money-making power. That's why Office XP, set to debut Thursday, is financially the most important product Microsoft will ship this fiscal year, analysts say. Office and other desktop applications accounted for 37 percent of Microsoft's $6.46 billion in revenue in the most recent quarter. As the Redmond, Wash.-based company prepares for the Windows XP launch Oct. 25 and Xbox's debut Nov. 8, cash flow is important. | ||

And everyone said this about Office 2k too because everyone said "Office 97 has all the features I need, I'll never need anything else!" Now can you imagine going back to Office97 from Office2K? I can't. It will probably be the same way with OfficeXP. |

I'm not going to bother responding to either of these wanks. The *fact* is, is that every time MS releases a new version of ANY of their software, all the nay-sayers come out of the wood-work claiming that no one will buy it spouting things like "microsoft tax" and "upgrade fee", etc. Then, 2 years later, almost everyone is running it. Everyone said that no one would buy Office 2k, yet it's seen sizable adoption. Everyone said no one would buy Win2K, yet Win2K has seen massive adoption. In a year or 2, the majority will be running Office XP and, when Office 2005 comes out, you guys will be saying the same thing about it... It's already become old. |

Well I have my ticket for the Office XP release extravaganza... Planning to go. But I must admit, from what little I have seen of Office XP it is not a compelling upgrade from Office 2000. I'm curious to see if Microsoft presents features I'm missing completely. I do have to agree that Microsoft needs to lower the price of their software. If I could buy Office for say $150 or so I'd have it at home. But it's well over $300. It also used to be that as long as you owned some version of some product dating back to WordStar you were eligible for the "Upgrade" version, but I've heard that is no longer the case. For businesses most of the cost of upgrading is in the labor involved in testing and deployment. The software costs are negligible. At least that's why we are delaying our deployment of Win2k at work. |
