China to build own version of Windows 98 | |

China has kicked off a development programme intended to produce a home-grown operating system with equivalent functionality to Windows 98, and with compatibility with Office 2000 and Word, reports The People's Daily this morning. The plan is to break the "monopoly of foreign office software," which we believe may be code for 'Microsoft,' and to this end the Beijing IT Industry Promotion Center announced two initiatives, "Yangfan" and "Qihang," intended to produce a Win98 level OS within a year. 18 companies and universities are worknig on them, and Yangfan 1.0 is already being deployed in government departments. | ||

China is going with Linux, that's what all the Linux zealots claim anyway. So there is obviously no truth to this story. |

#9: well, there's something else going on here. Over the past year or so, from the Reg and from Slashdot, I've seen conflicting stories:
- China blocks all Microsoft software - China signs deal with the US about curbing piracy of Microsoft software - China announces it's going all Linux and dumping MS - China signs multi-million dollar deal for Microsoft Office - China developing own version of Windows What's next? - China announces plan to buy 10 million copies of Windows over the next 2 months? |

And why would they want to reproduce Windows98?
Once again someone is trying to COPY Windows rather than coming up with something that will COMPETE with Windows. |

First, most people over there use priated Windows anyway. Second, one should not take government projects too seriously. A few years back, they have a similar project to clone Intel's 8086 processor when 486 was already widely used on PCs at that time. Microsoft will be delighted if all the goverment computers use Window 98 clone instead of Linux clone. This post was edited by Foxbat on Friday, July 19, 2002 at 16:35. |

I'm no Penguin-Thumper, but why don't they just use Linux and Open Office?
They can take this code, which is 100% complete, and then tweak it to their little hearts desire. This doesn't make ANY sense at all. TL |

I was in St Petersburg, Russia last week and was surprised to see that everywhere (litterly tens of places) you could buy CD with music and Software; all for 2-3$ per CD. It was amazing to see how much effort they put in to make the copy as perfect as possible; even fake holograms are placed on the covers and CDs. If Bill was there he really would feel sick. Maybe the Chinese government could strike a deal with MS, one price, all chinese can use it for free... ;-) How else could you control 1.2 billion people.
