Will Alternative Web Browsers Ever Unseat Microsoft? | |

Some analysts scoff at the very idea of alternative Web browsers -- any alternative, that is, to the dominant Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer. However, other browsers offer users some attractive features in addition to freedom from Microsoft, including speed, versatility, reduced hard drive footprint and ease of use. rowsers such as Mozilla, Opera, OmniWeb, Chimera and iCab have followers who swear by their speed and functionality. And there are a number of other more minor players, many of which can be used either for free or for a small shareware fee. Clearly, the number of alternative browsers indicates that developers have recognized the small but growing demand for alternatives to Internet Explorer. | ||

A growing demand? Four years ago, I downloaded several different browsers (including the horrible HotJava browser from Sun) to determine which I wanted to use. I chose Internet Explorer. I'd like to see a comparison between browser alternatives then and now. For the demand to be growing, there would need to be more demand or I suppose more alternatives since in theory that reflects demand. I'm not sure that would be the case.
I was thinking just a few days ago that it would be a fun project to write a web browser. Developers sometimes do things not because there is a market demand for it, but because they just feel like it. Even if I were to write my own browser, I'd still use IE except for the time that I was testing my own. |

| Paul Thurott made a good point. When Netscape was a player, you used to see all kinds of advances and updates to IE. But now that it's the only player, all the updates have ceased... |

On the emotional side (the one that would be a computer because it "looks good"), I'll not use Mozilla as long as it has a foolish and non descriptive name. When thinking of the possible functionality an application called "Internet Explorer" might provide, web surfing is at the top of my list. If Mozilla faced the same test, I'd likely think it was a game and be unpleasantly surprised.
#6 I'm not sure that I agree with Paul. I'd also say that Microsoft issues "updates" to Internet Explorer in other forms than service packs and new releases. For example, the XML support in Windows (and by extension in Internet Explorer) is provided by a set of XML components. These are updated, but not always at the same time as iexplore.exe application. Also, Internet Explorer in recent releases as added support (or enhanced existing support for) XML, XSLT, CSS, behaviors, web services (client side calls to web services), ftp (with the browser as a drag and drop client), XHTML. This new functionality which often won't be apparent to the user, since most users don't pay attention to URLs and HTML source. #9 Can someone compete with Internet Explorer? Certainly. Anyone who wants to invest as much as Microsoft has to produce a browser (or an operating system for that matter) can produce a competing product. Sun, IBM, and Oracle to name a few all have the money and ability to produce a competing product (browser, OS, or both) if they wanted to do so. Personally, I don't see much point in writing new browsers except to be Microsoft free. |

Other companies are doing it. Every Linux is just that, a new desktop operating system company. Lindows even claims that it can run Windows apps. Then again, running WINE on Linux would let you run Windows apps on Linux too (if I understand correctly).
Microsoft is jumping into new markets where the leaders are entrenched - enterprise servers, enterprise databases, video game consoles, etc. With a few billion dollars a lot is possible. We can even look at Apple's OS X. Granted they are competing against themselves, but the situation is similar, I think. |
