Sun Micro rolls out low-end server in Microsoft battle | |

Sun Microsystems Inc., aiming to stall Microsoft Corp.'s incursion in the low end of powerful server computers that manage networks, introduced on Tuesday an entry level machine with up to four processors. The Sun Fire V480, starting at about $23,000 with two microchips, is essentially a smaller version of its V880, an economy server introduced in October which holds up to eight chips and that Sun designed specifically to target machines running Microsoft's Windows. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun also rolled out a new version of the V880 with faster 900 megahertz UltraSPARC III processors. Both Sun and Microsoft claim their systems are cheaper to use. Sun's new 4-processor machine is certainly cheaper than its predecessor, the 420R which was listed at $28,595 on Sun's web site for a similar configuration with previous-generation microchips. | ||
