Wireless Standard 802.11a Arrives on the Desktop
Time: 14:30 EST/19:30 GMT | News Source: Associated Press | Posted By: Alex Harris

Two companies with vested interests in wireless local area network (LAN) technology have unveiled products connecting desktop computers with 802.11a short-range wireless systems that represent the next generation of LANs. Both SMC Networks and Proxim (Nasdaq: PROX - news) announced the offering of PC cards for 802.11a networks, which deliver higher transmission speeds and less interference than the more widely accepted 802.11b LAN standard.

According to Betty Chan, product manager of wireless networking solutions at SMC, the PCI adapter card completes an 802.11a-compliant system developed by SMC initially for laptop PCs, by bringing 802.11a connectivity to the desktop.
